University of Toronto ranks among top 25 universities in the world

A new university ranking has once again named the University of Toronto as one of the top 25 post-secondary institutions in the world. 

The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) is a consulting organization that provides policy advice and consulting services to governments and universities to improve educational and research outcomes. 

Since 2012, CWUR has been publishing its academic ranking of global universities that assesses the quality of education, employability, quality of faculty, and research without relying on university data submissions. 

In 2019, the ranking expanded to the top 2,000 out of the roughly 21,000 universities worldwide.

As mentioned, the organization uses seven indicators grouped into four areas to rank the world's universities.

These include education (based on the academic success of a university's alumni), employability (based on the professional success of a university's alumni), faculty (measured by the number of faculty members who have received top academic distinctions), and research (measured by the total number of research articles, the number of research articles appearing in top-tier journals, influence, and citations). 

The University of Toronto ranked #23 overall and #1 in Canada in 2025, placing it in the top 0.2 per cent of post-secondary institutions worldwide. The university received the same ranking in 2024 and 2023. 

The institution was highlighted by its research rank (#5), and faculty rank (#23) and received impressive rankings in the other two categories, including education (#219) and employability (#157). Overall, the school received a total score of 87.8 out of 100.

Other Ontario universities were also mentioned on the list, including Western University (#185), McMaster University (#186), University of Waterloo (#211), University of Ottawa (#220), Queen’s University (#333), York University (#490), University of Guelph (#515), Carleton University (#558), and Toronto Metropolitan University (#850). 

Canadian universities were well represented on the list, and included 

McGill University (#27), University of British Columbia (#48), University of Alberta (#81), University of Montreal (#124), University of Calgary (#202), University of Manitoba (#295), Laval University (#305), Dalhousie University (#353), Simon Fraser University (#405), University of Saskatchewan (#418), University of Victoria (#439), University of Sherbrooke (#622), and Concordia University (#629).
