Three Toronto streetcar routes have been restored after a lengthy outage, arriving just in time for the start of the busy summer events season in the city.
The TTC reintroduced service on the 509, 510 and 511 streetcars this past Sunday, June 22, ending temporary route outages that have inconvenienced transit users and motorists since February 2025.
Routes were replaced with buses since February due to a TTC and City of Toronto project to replace aging streetcar tracks and watermains at the intersection of Bathurst St., Lake Shore Blvd. W., and Fleet St.
Among the tasks involved, crews replaced curved streetcar tracks at Bathurst St/Eireann Quay and Queens Quay and on Bathurst St. from Front St. to King St. W., in addition to installing overhead wiring upgrades.
Crews have finished the bulk of this work, allowing streetcar service to resume over the weekend. However, work is expected to continue over the next few weeks as the TTC finalizes work on switches that were recently installed at the intersection.
In addition to the long-awaited resumption of service after four months, the 509 Harbourfront route is now being served at increased frequencies on Mon. to Fri. between 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays between 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. to handle increased summer crowds along the waterfront.
It's the one time of year when TTC passengers can expect service to actually improve, and the transit agency announced several more routes that are now seeing increased service as part of the transit agency's "seasonal service adjustments."
As of Monday, June 23, routes being reintroduced or now being served at higher frequencies include the 200 Toronto Zoo, the 201 Bluffer's Park, the 203 High Park, and the 92 Woodbine South.
In contrast, the 508 Lake Shore route is now suspended "due to reduced summer demand" until September 2, 2025.
