TTC will close portions of busiest subway line for the third weekend in a row

The TTC will shutter service on a portion of its busiest subway line for the third consecutive weekend, and commuters can expect trips relying on Line 1 to be a little more complicated than usual on December 14 and 15, 2024.

The transit agency plans to halt service between York Mills and St. Clair stations on Saturday and Sunday, the latest in a string of closures attributed to ongoing track work.

Service along this approximately 6.5-kilometre stretch spanning five stations will be replaced by shuttle buses, and staff will be on-hand at closed stations to keep passengers informed. The TTC has also promised to deploy extra Wheel-Trans buses along the closed stretch for customers requiring assistance.

Throughout the closure, Lawrence Station will be inaccessible to passengers, though the other four stations along the shuttered portion of subway will remain open for customers to purchase fares and reload Presto cards.

The transit agency promises that regular service will resume Monday, December 16, by 6 a.m.

TTC spokesperson Stuart Green tells blogTO that the closure will accommodate "Crosslinx work" related to the Eglinton Crosstown LRT. Green says the TTC may "piggyback" and use the closure to clear some of the transit agency's backlog, though this work is "not confirmed yet."

The closure follows a 14-day run of track work on a much larger stretch of the line spanning King to St. Clair West that included two consecutive full-weekend closures in late November and early December.

Toronto was given a brief reprieve from rolling closures for much of November amid a particularly busy few weeks, including Taylor Swift's historic Eras Tour run that drew hundreds of thousands of fans and a huge revenue boost to the city centre.

However, the closures are back with a vengeance, and transit users using on Line 1 are now bracing for the third consecutive weekend of disruption on the line.
