The Papermill Theatre at Todmorden Mills

Posted by Tim / August 21, 2008

Todmorden MillsIt's been almost a year since the Papermill Theatre opened on Pottery Road. But that didn't stop me from waiting until last week to make my inaugural visit. Set inside the historic Todmorden Mills, the theatre is currently hosting Remain in Light's production of Waiting for Godot.

Inside the main building of the restored paper mill, The Papermill Gallery has the feel of a small screening room. The seats are comfy, the projection equipment is state of the art, and the entire space is carved out of a series of beautiful post and beams.

It's the sort of space that's perfect for a smaller production, provided you can convince enough people to navigate the out of the way winding pavement that is Pottery Road. The theatre shares its space with an art gallery too which on some evenings provides the perfect backdrop for a pre or post-performance reception.

This is a theatre?
I always thought it was some of historical/heritage project.
The owners really should consider moving that sign in the picture (upper right) closer to the DVP in order to gain some more exposure.
A web page link on that same sign would also be a bonus.

Tim...Thanks so much for your wonderful pictures of The Papermill Theatre at Todmorden Mills.

Our theatre company, EAST SIDE PLAYERS, are the Resident Theatre Company, and have been performing at Todmorden Mills for almost 40 years. Prior to our tenancy in 1972, the building was used as a stable for the Toronto Police horses. When we took up residence in 1972 we created a theatre on site which we used for rehearsals, set building storage, club meetings and performances until 2003. In 2003 the City of Toronto started a two year renovation to bring the theatre up to its state-of-the art condition today.

Other theatre companies also share the space now. As well it is used for corporate functions & occasional lectures.

The Papermill Gallery in its previous life was home to the Don Valley Art Club and also housed a day-care centre prior to its renovation in early 2000-2001.

Check us out on the web - www.eastsideplayers.ca - for details about our upcoming 2009/10 season. To truly experience this wonderful property, come and see a show. We'll prove to you that your trek down Pottery Road is well worth the effort.
