Bowling alley to open in downtown Toronto

Posted by Tim / November 10, 2010

Bowling alley downtown TorontoToronto will finally get a downtown bowling alley later this year when The Ballroom opens in the old Montana's space at Richmond and John streets. Currently under construction ($4 million price tag, 20,000 square feet over 3 floors), the space has already been garnering some buzz with its advertising campaign featuring strikes, spares and turkeys. There's even a web site which kinda gives the concept away.

According to a source, The Ballroom is slated to open as early as mid-December, will include ten 10 pin bowling lanes, ping pong tables, 47 flat screen TVs, a local-food inspired menu, 15 different beers on tap, two outdoor patios and will be as much an upscale sports bar as it is a bowling alley.

Finally! A place where I can get my ping pong & beer fix all in one place. (I’m serious)

Montana, not Montana's. They were not related to the Montana's restaurant chain.

i've been talking about how much money a downtown alley could make for years! happy to see it happening.

At first I was thinking "a bowling alley downtown? Really?" But the way you described it, it sounds pretty cool actually. There's nothing else in the whole downtown core like it.

Wahoo. The Displaced Hamiltonian in me will be itchin to hit the lanes.

Let's hope those 15 drafts are not just Molson or Labatt. Nothing worse than paying entertainment district prices for a draft that has little quality.

usually bowl over at the alley at dundas & kipling. But this is something i would travel down town to do. Pretty exciting news, can't wait.

I'm so overwhelmingly excited about this I feel I need to engage in some serious self-reflection.

Screw that! Bowling! Ping pong! I'm so glad someone is adding some variety and some good old fashioned dorktastic fun to the Entertainment District.

It is worth pointing out, Toronto has had downtown bowling before....

The Olympia Lanes if memory serves.........

Today, more popularly known, as "The World's Biggest Bookstore"

neat idea, i'm really looking forward to it, but it seems like it could be a really popular (crowded) place...

Correcting a national shame. Of all the reasons for kvetching that Toronto isn't a world-class city, the lack of a bowling alley downtown was the only one I could really get behind.

Finally! No more commuting to the boonies to bowl!

Prices will probably be much more inflated though.. oh well.

Vinnie's is still vacant. Hopefully The Ballroom will be a huge success, and then someone else will use the Vinnie's space for something similar. Now that's what I call an Entertainment District!

Not 10 bowling lanes, 10-pin bowling lanes, as opposed to 5-pin; no mention of how many lanes though. Rest assured, I'm sure it'll be more than ten.

Nope, Mir was right:

"ten 10 pin bowling lanes".. a bit confusing, I agree, but it does say that there will be ten lanes for 10-pin bowling.

when i first heard about this, I thought it was going to be a lucky strike. I'm surprise they're only up in Vaughn Mills and not make their way downtown.

Hmm...anyone want to hazard a guess as to how many of the above posts are by the bowling alley owners themselves??

seriously, read all the comments again. do they *really* sound like the posts blogTO readers normally offer up, or language they'd usually use??

I heard it's a group of local Toronto guys, I think it's an unreal idea! Talk about seriously injecting something unique into the city. I can't wait to watch hockey night in Canada while BOWLING. EPIC!

Looks like its modelled on the Brooklyn Bowl - which means this venue is only missing some of the best bar food and beer you can find in Brooklyn. Great concept - and getting trashed, and bowling at a hot chip after party is something to experience.

What determines if this succeeds or fails is the price per round. If it actually is 15$ a game with 10$ shoe rentals, I hope it fails miserably. That's way too much to roll a fucking rock down a shiny floor.

In the past there were many tournamanets where if you got three strikes in a row then you won a turkey! That's the one I know but there may be other explanations.

LAME.....they are TEXTING people to work there. Those who went to the open house a month ago are literally getting TEXT messages rather than the bowling alley CALLING to say you go the job....Human Resources has a kid working for them. I predict this will close within 6 months

Anyone think with the holidays they just wanted to make sure people knew what was going on and this is an effective way to reach people? Wouldn't any place that just opens still be looking for people to work? We all know the turnover of staff when a place just opens...

Where are people seeing that it's $15 a game and $10 for shoe rentals? According to the website shoe rentals are $5 and to play for half an hour, at peak times, is at the ridiculous price of $32.50. Sixty. Five. Dollars. An. Hour.

Went to try this place out. I spent all of 3 seconds in there and the visit went something like this:
Open the door.
Look up and see the price.
Wait for the price tag of $65/hour to register.
Turn and leave.
