Toronto Photo Essay: Cruisin' on a Saturday Night

Saturday night, pull out on the boulevard in your big block Chevy and cruise with the top down, see some friends and have a good time. How many songs have been written about this favourite pastime?

North Americans' love of the automobile is once again under fire as gas prices rise and environmental concerns make our dependence on non-renewable energy unreasonable. Our recent obsession with SUVs and newly redesigned muscle cars, while never economical, has acquired a ugly, irresponsible stigma resulting in plummeting sales for the big three automakers.

For some, however, it's not about the price of gas, it's always been simply a love affair with the thing itself: the automobile, and streetclassics.ca have been bringing the love to a Canadian Tire parking lot on the Queensway, every Saturday night during the summer.

deloreanBoasting an informal membership in the hundreds, Streetclassics holds their "cruise nights" in the parking lot of the Canadian Tire at Queensway and Hwy 427. By 8pm on a recent Saturday they had over 350 cars in the lot, from a beautifully restored Ford Model "A" to a Delorean, and everything in between.

Looking around one can see cliques of Corvettes, Cameros and Cars With Fins, but the one thing that everyone seems to have in common is pride - many owners have spent weeks, months, even years restoring their cars to perfection, and given the chance they will tell you how it all happened day-by-day, part-by-part!

They don't actually "cruise" any more because the permits and liability insurance the government requires make it unreasonable. Of course, this just makes it easier to see the cars and keep up to date with friends, and Streetclassics provides the perfect environment.

Streetclassics provides snacks and drinks, period music playing on the PA and they also sell souvenirs and t-shirts for the club. On September 7th, they held their first classic car auction, benefiting a local charity. Their website has details on this and other activities.

Amazing! I went all the way to Michigan this summer for a "cruise" ... didn't realize that one happened right here, all summer long!

The Queensway Cruise is the best cruise by far in Southern Ontario and is a pleasure to attend with our classic cars. George and Bonnie and crew are first class all the way!!

An antique car is generally defined as a car over 25 years of age. The term classic car is often used synonymously with antique car. Here only one phrase can be said.. by just reviewing the pictures and that is.. older is the wine, greater is the taste... similarly antique is the car.. better is the lavish rich style for a royal feel..

Hi guys, I read the part that you don,t go Cruisin any more due to the Permits & Insurance Liabilities. It saddens me to hear that 'cause I'm in Adelaide South Australia & we have no problems at this point & time Cruising around with that many Cars. The Yank Tank scene is very big here espesially the Classics '50s & '60s. I myself have a '60 Ford Thunderbird & am in the "Wanderers Rock 'N' Roll Car Club." Yesturday (Sunday) we had the Annual "Bay to Birdwood Museum Run" from the Coast to the Hills, about 50 kilometers. "All Classics" gathered, Australian, European, & American, from 1946-1975. There were 1,800 cars on the run. 150 weren't able to get into the final destination as the grounds were full. It was a Cool 16C but Sunny & no rain as we're into our first month of Spring. Our full on Cruisin has pretty well started & will continue till about May 2010. What's the most amount of cars are you permitted to Cruise with? I Lived in TORONTO from '71-'76 in the Apartments at Steels & Jane. We came for a visit 2 Years ago with my CANADIAN Wife & boy have things changed. Enjoy your Car gatherings.
