Help Put Toronto on the (Monopoly) Map

toronto on the world monopoly gameCome on, Toronto. We know you're online, and that you like voting. Surely you don't want us to end up being the not-so-proud owners of one of the cheapest and least visited properties in the world.

The toy company Hasbro is running a worldwide, online campaign to elect 22 cities for inclusion on the board of their upcoming world edition of Monopoly, and our fine city is in the running - just barely.

--

As it stands, Toronto is just qualifying for a position (currently in position 19 of 22 18 of 22; what would be Vermont Avenue Connecticut Avenue on the regular board). We trail many other cities, including fellow Canadian metropolises Vancouver and Montreal (see the full leader board).

If Toronto really is so hooked on Facebook, so Twittery, all over Flickr, and so bloggerific, why are all of these other cities whipping our butt in the online Monopoly vote?

We have until the end of February to up our rank. You can vote for Toronto once every day. Use your spam-friendly email account.

An after-thought...

If Toronto had a player piece in the world edition of Monopoly, what one iconic symbol would it be?

The CN Tower, duh.

Though Zanta would be funner. Duh.

If we win and it turns out anything like the Nintendo Monopoly game, it'll be a bitchin' waste of money to plunk'r down on. I've long thought it'd be fun to just print out my own and lay it on top of an old monopoly board. The first two purple properties would be Jane and Finch avenues, ZING

The CN Tower is cliched (and no longer has world recognition as the tallest free-standing structure).

If it were ruled out, what would be our next option?

Posted by: Jerrold at February 3, 2008 1:21 PM

A condo?

Posted by: Chris at February 3, 2008 1:37 PM

A car (running over a cyclist)?

Posted by: Jerrold at February 3, 2008 1:49 PM

a TTC transfer that is no longer valid because the bus is late.

A Queen St. Street Car!

They would give us that shite spot on the board too, no doubt. I bet Toronto, Ohio would be higher valued.

Posted by: Chris Orbz at February 3, 2008 3:19 PM

Unless that's just voting based. I can't be bothered signing up for an account on this website, personally, and I bet that's stopped a lot of people from voting.

Posted by: Chris Orbz at February 3, 2008 3:20 PM

I was all excited and ready to vote, but then found out I had to sign up for an account. I'm sure that is the reason we're not voting on mass.

Posted by: Laura Bee at February 3, 2008 4:37 PM

^^ That's why I'm not voting, too.

why do we always try to seek inclusion by others? why is it so important to some people that Toronto be included in this and that.. this is just pathetic.. why do we always make a big deal about little things, like being ranked as one of best cities to live in, cn tower is not the tallest, blah blah blah.. we are the best kept secret in the world, let other people discover us.. we are different and we are loved by the rest of the world.. well, except our ttc

There's no such thing as a 'least visited' property on the Monopoly board. Each space has an equal chance of being landed upon. So where's the shame? In "cheaper" vs. "luxury" properties. Come on, really, that is so cheezy.

The fact is in Monopoly the expensive properties extract more 'tax' from other players and that is their attraction. Let's call it what it is. Do you want Toronto-exploitive -high-rent-landlord or Toronto-exploitive-slumlord?

Posted by: Robert Labossiere at February 3, 2008 8:22 PM

"Each space has an equal chance of being landed upon"

Then what does all this mean?

http://www.tkcs-collins.com/truman/monopoly/monopoly.shtml#Long_term

Different properties on the board DO have different probabilities of being landed on when you take the chance cards, the go to jail, the go to GO, etc into account.

"we are different and we are loved by the rest of the world"

No, we're not loved. Try telling other Canadians you are from Toronto... Dirty looks all the time.

Posted by: goleafsgo [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 4, 2008 3:19 AM

Of course you're not loved but hated - I just read on a forum (Vancover probably) - sth. like this - I'll vote any city but NOT Toronto...

This is only a fun - but not so much - try to immagine, that this Monopoly will be distributed all over the world - and it is a kind of promotion.

And promoting Toronto is very important, because it's not seen as a touristic destination (even with Niagara in a backyard).

To some retardant that would close Toronto to anyone but hippes one basic explanation: tourist dollars are probably the best and most ecological

And it is really a great shame for the largest city in Canada (and so multinational - what means that potencially you can obtain votes from relatives all over the world) - to be in the lower end of the first 20 cities, while Montreal is just the second (!!!) and Vancouver somewhere very high...

Only 20 cities enter the game - Toronto may be well... 21st and will not be included

Some more local patriotism!

:))))

One more thing - quite important - you can repeat your vote every day (for any 10 cities of the list) and also nominate a 'wild card' - a city not included on the list.

What were the reasons to include some cities in the list (and other not) is quite misterious...

I'd suggest you to help Poland and vote a nominee GDYNIA (now it's 4th), because it could be the only one from Poland - only Warsaw was included in the main list, and for now it laggs far behind.

Thanks in advance :))

Edinburgh and Moscow are getting the shaft.

Posted by: John at February 4, 2008 8:44 AM

of course people in vancouver give us the dirty looks 'cause they can't afford to buy their own home there!

Posted by: jack at February 4, 2008 8:10 PM

Signing up for an account and filling out personal information = marketing scheme that benefits them (to your direct detriment)

telling them which cities are most interested in Monopoly the board game = marketing scheme that benefits them

I'd say congratulations might even be in order for Toronto for not falling for this one. Facebook already bought our soul anyway :P

Posted by: Chris Orbz at February 5, 2008 2:01 AM

I will share some information that will certainly help put Toronto on the Monopomap.

IF you are worried about signing up, you don't have to be!
Word, didn't you know there are things out there called disposable email addresses? And if you are concerned about your e-mail address - don't be!

Just use these resources: bugmenot com, dontreg com, dodgeit com, jetable org, wuzupmail net works great and there are more out there

I think it would be a shame not to have Toronto featured in this Monopoly. Who cares about marketing tactics and schemes - at the end of the day it's all about Global recognition. Don't be shy. Put Toronto on the Monopomap!

Chris Orbz seems to be one of those who believe in conspiracy theory - the sad thing is that such a behaviour is useless and conterproductive.

If one is afraid of being 'spied' - so why to write on BlogTO...? Aren't you afraid of being traced (by IP) and give BlogTO powerful marketing tool?

Jesus... when I read some posts I wonder how old are you...

A Torontonian all my life and having travelled most of the world, please tell me why we should even be considered on the Monopoly board? Whats exciting in this city? The CN Tower...oohhh, please were a joke and not a world class city in my eyes, London, Paris, New York, Tokoyo....yes, were like the kid who never shuts up about how great we are, people lets get over ourselves, were not the center of the developed world, were Hogtown and if we continue on our current path we will always be minnows on the world stage!
