Wakestock 2007: Day One Fun
Centre Island hasn't been so much fun since I was a kid. The first day of Wakestock gave me a chance to familiarize myself with the grounds and get a taste of the awesome skating, wakeboard and music events featured throughout the weekend.
There was so much to see and do in one day, I hardly know where to begin. Lots of awesome photos and stories to tell after the drop-in...
I wandered by the Telus booth where
a banana-split eating contest was underway.
Vendor tents littered the grounds at the Action Sports Expo & Marketplace, offering samples that ranged from Gillette Fusion razors to Frank's Red Hot sauce.
I wandered through the assortment, meeting cool people and picking up a few freebies as I went: $5 gift vouchers from Greyhound Canada, stickers from Blindfive Clothing and In the Basement , and samples of chocolate milk and Coke. I thought of combining them to make a brown cow.
I saw lots of cool skater clothes at Corbett's where I met Amelia (pictured here in the pink shirt). But that left me too hot to put on more clothes.
So I headed towards the water to cool off, where I took in some wakeboard action before heading back to the RGX Skatepark, where I saw Andre Besner, 14, do a spread-eagle pop-shove earlier in the day.
I had a brief chat with Chad Wilson, 14, and Tyler McMaster, 16, who were showing off their mad boarding skillz.
By 6pm it was time to board the ferry back to the mainland to catch the kickoff concert at the MuchMusic parking lot, featuring live performances by The Salads and My Darkest Days.
I also caught Toronto's first ever Urban Freestyle Moto-Xhibition which left me deaf and in awe.
If you missed all this action, don't you worry. Saturday's lineup is stellar! You get to see a whole lot more skating, wakeboarding and a bunch of hot musical acts such as The Deftones, Goldfinger, De La Soul and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien (the voice of Gorillaz' Clint Eastwood and Rock the House.
If that's not enough to lure you for tomorrow's events, perhaps the Miss Reef Canada thong bikini Contest, presented by SBC Surf Magazine, will bring you there.
