Somebody Isn't Quite Clear on the Concept

clueless_Aug23_06.jpgExperts have been warning of an obesity epidemic for years. Governments are encouraging everybody to become more active in daily life.

Despite this, it seems that the Bloor Park Fitness Club by Yonge and Bloor isn't quite latching on to that 'whole health' philosophy - or they just don't want their members excercising for free.

Either way, I found it more than a tad amusing that a health club would be encouraging people to take an escalator when there is a perfectly good set of stairs just around the corner. I suppose nobody wants to work up a sweat before they start working out.

A closer look:

Not to be a prick or anything but perhaps the escalator was there before the gym took possession of the property...

Yes, the escalator was there - but there are also stairs.

Going up one flight of stairs to get there and down one flight to leave isn't going to make a difference to anyone's fitness.

it won't make a huge difference, but if you change your routine so you climb a flight of stairs as opposed to taking short-cuts, it's a slow and steady improvement.

i've always figured it's the little changes you make in your daily routine that matter. they add up.

I don't think a flight of stairs would take away all or even a tiny bit of your energy, so that it affects your performance when you really work out.
If you think otherwise, then I think you should start finding other means of getting from a to b without walking, so that you can save that extra energy to workout hard later in the day.

whatever. There's a war on, you know? Actually a few wars.

War should fit in nicely, as a new category on blogTO. Right between food and fashion. Or perhaps between music and arts? :P

I wasn't being totally serious. Maybe you should have a section on nit-picking and navel-gazing?

That's what the comments are for! ;)

People, like me, with high metabolism should take the escalator so they won't burn off the muscles they are trying so hard to build...muscles grow when you rest so rest more often...

Actually, the club itself is a nightmare to find from the subway as it's a tiny sign on an in-road off Bloor. You have to buzz to get into the building and then take another elevator up. It took me a couple of months to realize the escalators were the quickest way to the club.

Sure Christine, if you want 'facts' to rule you, then yes, you could be 'reasonable'. I suppose. =P

Think of all the people who *drove* to the club in the first place.
