Vistek

Vistek TorontoVistek, located further east along Queen Street, rivals Henry's for the comprehensiveness of its product lines and tends to be ever so slightly cheaper overall. Whether it be Nikon, Canon, or high-end medium format stuff like Hasselblad, it's all here. Also noteworthy is the store's excellent selection of rental items and Mac products. Bonus points for a solid service department as well.

I had a horrible experience at Vistek. I took in a pile of stuff for appraisal: 2 camera bodies, several lenses, flashes, etc. I'm from out of town. I mentioned I would be going to Henry's next for a comparison price. Mentioning being 4 hours from Toronto was my mistake. They stalled me with a price from their "appraiser" until Henry's closed for the day! Then they lowballed me. I stupidly took their offer on a purchase of a D-700. I cancelled the order when I discovered Henry's selling the D700 for less. They were to mail me a cheque for the items that I sold to them. It was nearly 6 weeks before receiving payment. Only after several calls to the sales person perched on his stool, then 2 different Managers, the Store Manager, all whom told me that the cheque was in the mail and they could not understand why I had not received payment. None bothered to check and call me back. I had to constantly call them, or I would still be waiting for payment.

Never again will I deal with that unorganized, lackidazical store and their employees.

I happily deal at Henrys just down the street at Church Street.

Will be in tToronto soon and will be visiting all the local camera stores.
I will make try and keep an open mind when entering and will report back with impressions from those visits.
These blogs are always an opportunity for getting a bit of a heads up before arriving and why not do a bit of research if it spins your wheels.

Paul,
I know how you feel about Vistek, My only hope is, that they fired all the persons including the manager which have been involved in your ordeal. I was going to shop for a Canon D60, but I can assure you not at Vistek.

Terrible customer service, non existent. Never went back ever again ! Was ignored and had 2 Vistek staff hanging together chatting it up when I clearly was right there in front of them !
After a few awkward moments of that, I left. Went to Henrys

I was buying my first dslr and had know idea which one to get or anything about specs of the entry level cameras. Mike spent 2 hours with me, showing me the cameras, all of the available bags and I was so indecisive, yet he was very polite and patient.
Also, he matched the price to the cheapest available in Canada! so definitely ask for that if you can! I ended up buying the kit 100$ cheaper than the same at Henry's!
Everybody was polite and helpful, from the girl at the reception desk, to the sales rep! overall, great experience, all 5 stars!

A very bad experience at Vistek:
I've been a client for many years now. After all these years buying, paper, inks, films, lenses and any time I needed to rent equipment the first store that came into my mind was this one.
One day I needed to rent a 24-70mm 2.8 Nikon lens and some lighting equipment. I came to this store to rent it as usual. I got the lens on Friday and I didn't use it till Saturday morning to test the lens using my wife as my model. After 5 shots the lens got stock. I had a wedding that day and I had to go in a rush all the way to Toronto from Oshawa and back to change the lens. The next Monday morning this guys were telling me that I had to leave a $300.00 deposit to repair the lens. I told them what happened and in a very accusatory way the manager told me that the lens had left the store working. I spoke to another manager and the only thing he did was nothing about it.
I will never return to this store since I was guilty and had to pay for something somebody else broke. I am doing my research around and I know I will never have to go back here since they didn't take care of me, being a faithful client. I felt very offended and mistreated.
I don't want nothing to do with these people.

I completed my degree in photography in 1989 and have been a commercial photographer since then. I have been dealing with Vistek since I left school. My rep (since retired) in the commercial side was always helpful, no attitude whatsoever and quite knowledgeable. I have had quite a different experience with the floor staff at the Toronto store. The few I have dealt with have been very arrogant and condescending. I'm fortunate enough to have a background in the industry and so know when I'm being fed a bill of goods or a sales pitch. All stores have a sales staff with a range of experience, but I've run into a few too many in that store that have absolutely no reason to be arrogant. For some, I would rate their knowledge as weak.
