They are SOOO HELPFUL and completely object here. Wonderful staff who help you pick out what is best for your pet. Also, my cat didn't like the wet catfood that I'd bought him so I returned the two extra cans with no reciept, no problem. I highly recommend this store.

They refuse to bring in any products that are made in China.
Supporting local economy or racist,... Is it just product's from China or other countries outside of North America.

in response to Terry, a lot of local shops will not carry products from China especially when it comes to pet products. Their standards are completely different than Canadian or American standards and therefore the quality is compromised. Not only that, but most of the paints still contain lead and the amounts are alarming. There is a lot of information surrounding this all over the place, its just most people are not well informed. Besides, the staff is so great at Helmutts, you could most definitely ask them, and im sure they would discuss what their reasons are.

Helmutts is one of the few stores that cares about people over profit!! Why would you want a company to bring in a product from overseas, creating carbon emissions, from a country with questionable quality standards when they could find a locally made item that is NOT the product of child labour and helps sustain local jobs? I for one will not shop anywhere else! Not only do they have ethics but also a knowledgeable and friendly staff who love my dog! If you want crap made in China from an unfriendly staff with a giant profit margin, go to Timmies or a chain store....

Sorry to burst your bubble Terry, littlemissdoglover and Lauren ... but Helmutt's does carry products that are made in China. They carry Cuz and Chuckit balls that are made in China just to name two.

Went in there a couple of weeks ago and dealt with the new guy. He was not very helpful, didn't know the products or if certain products could be brought in. Seemed too busy with the computer. I liked the girl that used to work there before him, she was pretty helpful and knew her stuff. The daytime staff is chatty but complains a lot about her job and other customers. I don't think I will be shopping here anymore.

This is in response to Jake's comment.
I am the regular daytime staff, and I am slightly offended by your comment, you are certainly entitled to your opinion but please do not put words into my mouth....I love my job and have for the last 4 years, if I did not I would move on. Not once have I EVER said that I do not like my job or dislike our customers, we truly have the best customers, In regards to the "new guy", please keep in mind that he is new and learning the products. If you have a specific complaint I would be happy to talk with you and help solve your problems, helping and retaining our customers is our number one goal and I do apologize if your needs were not met.

@ Melissa. I don't think Jake gave a name or a description, he just said daytime staff. You sound a bit sanctimonious in your rant. Maybe it was Jake's way of saying "shut your pie hole" and do what you are paid to do and that is to serve customers and take pet food orders. I wonder, are you the one that talks about people's personal lives? I was in the store one day when I heard you talk about a staff member's relationship with her girlfriend, the messy break-up and who did what. I thought about complaining to your boss about that. As for the "new guy" not knowing the products, it's pet food and he's been working there since the beginning of summer. How long does it take to learn about pet food?

You are correct there is a slight possibility that it was not me but considering we have only 3 staff and I am the only daytimer there is a very good chance that it is in fact me.When something untrue is being said about me, of course I am going to defend myself. Wouldn't you?
On many occasions there are personal conversations that occur in our store, we have good relationships with our customers and sometimes things get personal. If anything was said that offended you, again I apologize. Yes I am a chatty person, if that makes me annoying well so be it, I am who I am and I strive to build good relationships with our customers.
We deal with thousands of products here and sometimes we do not know not everything that is out there...the "new guy" is doing a great job and the customers(well most of them) love him. I rather him say he does not know something, and offer to research rather than lying to save face.
I get it, we are not everybody's cup of tea...but we try our best.

Wow. I cannot believe the level of rudeness that is permitted on these comments. Tom, you should be ashamed of yourself. You may think you're saying something of value, but all you've done is prove what a jerk you are. "Shut your piehole"?!!! Do us a favour and take your own advice!

And frankly, in a city where we're all too often confronted with crummy customer service, it's refreshing that someone actually wants to connect with their customers and staff on a more personal level. Helmutt's is the brilliant store it is because of people like Melissa and her staff. And honestly, they don't need customers like you.

@ Melissa
You don't understand talking about a coworkers personal life to customers is wrong? I wouldn't want my coworkers to talk about my relationship with my boyfriend to strangers.

@ Monika, who are you to insult Tom or censor what he can say?
You think your superior to him but you're not especially if you're condoning gossip that could be defamatory
and immflammatory.
Coming off like Mother Teresa, all holier than thou. You're just as bad as you think he is.
Are you saying if you don't agree with Melissa's warped logic don't shop at Helmutt's. Well, then Helmutt's just lost a very long time customer.

Jackie, I do agree with you in regards to co workers personal lives. That was not me, it could be a former employee but I can't say for sure. As I said before if something upset a customer, I want them to let us know so we can fix it, writing it on here doesn't really hep solve the problem. Things get misunderstood, it is hard for us to fix something when it is not brought to my attention.
When I was referring to personal conversations I meant the ones I have with regular customers..I have been through deaths, births, illness, break ups you name it...customers confide in me. That will not change, but I will be more aware if things that are being said are offensive to others. Telling me I have a warped sense of logic is a bit harsh.
I would not like to lose any customers especially someone who has been shopping here for many years.Keeping our customers is extremely important and something I take very seriously.
Alas I give in, nothing I say will go without a angry post in response. At the end of the day I will continue to the best job I can and hope the same from my co workers.

Great location, nice store, good product (although with my new dog I've been buying food from my vet- he's got allergy problem) but the best place for all sorts of snacks. My Rudger wishes that Helmutt's would carry more snack options for dogs with allergy.

Comment above from Lauren

Really?!? Everybody in business in it for good profits. And you're not being fair about crap from China and unfriendly staff at Timmies,...

@Monika. Why are you defending bad customer service. That is a real shame. So, Tom was a bit crude, but true.

@Melissa, you need to take some courses in customer service in retail. Your comments on this site has hurt you and Helmutt's reputation even more by rambling and defending yourself.

I am disgusted with the customer service I've received on multiple occasions at Helmutt's. The staff are obnoxious, lazy, and far from friendly. Of course knowing that pet owners have limited resources down-town Toronto helps boost their arrogance. Needless to say, I would never recommend Helmutt's to anyone. I rather travel a bit further to get good customer service and competent staff.
