The top 5 free events in Toronto: July 25-31 2016

The top free events in Toronto start off on a more relaxing tip (films, city talks) and then move into immersive park hangouts and dance parties. Bring a handkerchief, 'cause there will be sweat and tears.

Here are my top picks for absolutely free things to do in Toronto this week.

The Birth of Sake (July 25)
Admission is free and there's AC at this screening of a beautiful and immersive portrait of life at the 144-year old Yoshida Brewery, a producer of world class sake. They're moving into their 6th generation of operation, and balancing the past and future is getting harder. Screening at the Japan Foundation.

The Real Jane Jacobs (July 26)
The Grounds for Thought is a discussion series held on the last Tuesday of every month at The Green Beanery, and this one is special. There's free coffee and speakers Max Allen (CBC Ideas), Lawrence Solomon (National Post) and long-time colleagues of the influential urbanist thinker Jane Jacobs. Should be a cool night of discussion about city life.

Trinity Bellwoods Movie Night (July 26)
Most outdoor movie nights in the city are adorable. Cuddling up on the grass or next to the water in parks across Toronto is so simple and fun. Bellwoods, however, has the advantage of nature's amphitheatre with their Dog Bowl movie nights. Tonight they'll screen The Sweater and The Triplettes of Belleville.

Versa (July 29)
I've included this event on the list because it's going to be very hot and this is outdoors, next to the beautiful, often overlooked waterworks of the Sherbourne Commons. This is a trippy soundtrack and visual to a relaxing evening in the park. Perfect for summer date or friend situations. Start time is 9 p.m.

Soul Sunday Street Party (July 31)
Every Pedestrian Sunday in Kensington Market there's a dance party, and it's not as random as it make look or seem. It's the Soul Sunday Street Party! Music by Gentlemen Soul Brothers and an opening meditation sit and installation with the Consciousness Explorers Club. If you get tired just walk away into the Market.

Do you have a free event this week you think we all need to know about? Let us know in the comments and let's get free!
