20070228_soweto.jpgAs we mentioned a while back, the Soweto Gospel Choir was at the Hummingbird last night for the first of two not yet sold out shows. To say the crowd was impressed would be an understatement. They received a standing ovation before their final song and the crowd stayed standing - if not dancing and clapping - throughout their encore.

The Soweto Gospel Choir, as their name suggests, is a collection of musical talents from various churches and communities in and around Soweto, a historical black area in the city of Johanessburg, South Africa. My girfriend, who enjoyed the performance even more than I did, loved their traditional colourful outfits and thought their rendition of Amazing Grace was the best she ever heard.

The show included a mix of familiar and original songs and the choir often alternated between those that featured men or women, alto and basso. My fave was definitely the guy with the deep Barry White-esque voice who was kind of like an elder statesman that oozed charm even if he didn't have the dance moves of some of his younger counterparts.

The Soweto Gospel Choir performs again tonight, February 28th at 8pm. Some tickets are still available

A great antidote to winter, warmth emanates from both song and dance.
