Newmindspace: Jingle Bell Rock

Posted by Ryan C / December 14, 2006

Hot on the heels of the train stopping Radical Illumination, Newmindspace are throwing at least one more party before the year ends. Jingle Bell Rock is set to bring music lovers into Union Train Station on Friday, December 15th, with everyone pressing play on their mp3/cd/portable vinyl players when the clock strikes 9:09pm. Zero disruption to transportation services has been promised. BlogTO will be there to photograph the puzzled onlookers watching hundreds of people dance to music only they can hear. Here's to hoping an electro duo/trio shows up with keytars, a TR-909, and a small mixer that people can plug into.

So there I was, zipping down the streets of Tel Aviv in the summer (05, not 06) on the back of my friend's toos-toos (scooter), looking for fun and trouble with a night to kill that hadn't even begun, really -- still daylight. We pass this gaggle of Israelis dancing to their own little beat, which is kinda funny enough if you've ever seen Israelis dance -- they mostly love techno of a 4/4, typical nature from what I've seen -- and we pull over. Then we notice they all have on headphones, and eventually one of them hands us a <a href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/2332/42/1600/MC13.jpg";>flyer</a> (this one's from a diff. day I think, but around the same time).

The sight of long-haired and otherwise <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hipster+doofus";>hipster-doofus</a> types fruggin' around on an isthmus, without hearing the tunes myself, gave me hope for peace that day ... well, maybe not, but I know Kevin and Lori have had this Toronto version in mind for a while, so it ought to be fun. Try watching everyone dance without your headphones on for at least a minute too, pretty silly and cool effect.

I've got important boozing on someone else's tab to do so I'll miss it. Otherwise I would have like to bring a stopwatch and take bets on how many seconds it takes Union Stations famously overzealous pretend cops to shut this down.

Really, Chester? I hadn't thought of that. Huh. I hope you're wrong, in a good way -- you know what I mean.

chester has become a doubter as of late - however, we do believe that our large numbers and positive spirit will keep this event afloat as long as the crowd wills :)

Don't get me wrong I think the idea is great and if it comes off it will be fun. My caution is with the choice of venue that is a) legally private property and b) known to have overzealous/paranoid security that the reality is it will at best be a disappointment by being shut down way early.
