YO - Music from the Heart of Japan and the Spirit of India Toronto Debut

YO is a Tokyo-based trio that weaves two ancient traditions into the music of today, representing the finest of world music aspirations. Bringing together the talents of three master artists, YO features Yutaka Oyama on shamise, Akihisa Kominato, shakuhachi and tabla player Ty Burhoe. The name YO is particularly fitting - in ancient Japanese it means 'song or melody' and in the modern language, it connotes 'community' and 'this moment' we live in. The music of YO has roots in traditional music of India and Japan, yet it reflects the nature of our modern culture and community.

A cutting edge world music experience of gorgeous melodies, sizzling rhythms and riffs and scintillating synergy. This is YO, a collaboration of three internationally renowned musicians, possessing towering talent on their instruments and each boasting dynamic and wide-ranging careers in their respective fields. Live, YO's onstage chemistry is a kind of musical alchemy taking listeners to the very roots of each of their instruments. From the classical Indian rhythms of the Ty Burhoe's tabla and the meditational lyricism of the Zen-informed shakuhachi flute of Akihisa Kominato, and the sizzling folk melodies from northern Japan on Yutaka Oyama's shamisen. YO creates a confluence of these traditions in original works and arrangements of modern and classical pieces that offers a highly accessible and enjoyable experience that brings audiences right into the music.
