Our final show of this year’s X Avant delivers two exceptional examples of the state of this city’s rhythmic cross-pollination that point to the future.

Absolutely Free is a trio based in Toronto which creates a hypnotic, patient music that integrates analog electronics, African polyrhythms, psychedelia, Bollywood, and Krautrock. The group formulates musical experiments based on instrumentation, compositional structure, and formal qualities ubiquitous to popular rock music. Evolving from years of touring and releasing albums as defunct art punk band DD/MM/YYYY, Absolutely Free first released an EP in 2012, followed by their debut album two years later which was included on the Polaris Music Prize Long List for 2014.

Keita Juma is a Mississauga-based rapper/producer. Originally born in that crucible of the UK underground, Bristol, where dub reggae, West Coast rap, and future bass morphed into highly original artists such as Massive Attack and Portishead. Moving to Canada broadened Juma’s musical influences with sounds of the Dirty South and East Coast rap. Studyinging sound engineering and production at Metalworks Institute, in 2012 he dropped the critically acclaimed LP Water, followed by the dark, well-crafted Chaos Theory in early 2015. Juma’s new EP Nights In Space hits the street in advance of X Avant Nights.
