WordSpell Spoken Word Showcase & open mic feat. Sheri-D Wilson & Eyeda Sophia!

We are back with our bi-monthly showcase that features some of the hottest voices in spoken word. There will also be an OPEN MIC, open to those who identify as womyn. There may be some epic womyn's birthday to celebrate too!

Sheri-D, the Mama of Dada herself will be with us from Calgary and Eyeda Sophia will bring her TO flare to Free Times! The WordSpell Collective runs the only series bringing together talented established and emerging womyn spoken word artists on a regular basis in Toronto.

Doors open at 7 pm Open Mic sign up at 7:30 Show at 8

Tickets at door: $6 and up cash

ALL ages & genders welcome in the audience!

FEATURE'S BIOS:

SHERI-D WILSON The Mama of Dada has 9 collections of poetry; her most recent, Open Letter: Woman Against Violence Against Women. Her collection, Re:Zoom 2005, Frontenac House, won the 2006 Stephan G. Stephansson Award for Poetry, and was shortlisted for the CanLit Award. She has 2 Spoken Word CDs and four award-winning VideoPoems, all produced for BravoFACT.

Sheri-D has a long history teaching students at different places in their educational development from coast to coast to coast. She continually mentors emerging artists to hone their craft from near and far. She is the Founder & Artistic Director 2003-2014 of the Calgary Spoken Word Festival and the Founder/Director of the Spoken Word Program @ Banff Centre 2005-2012. In 2011 she edited, The Spoken Word Workbook: inspiration from poets who teachthe Go-To educational tool for teaching and writing Spoken Word.

Known for her interest in the environment she was headliner at The 2014 Emerald Awards and in 2013 she was honored to read with David Suzuki. In 2012, she was featured in Chatelaine Magazine, in a story about the creative mind. A regular on CBC, in 2013, she was interviewed by Canadian icon Sheilah Rogers. In 2011, she was honored to be presented by The National Slam of Canada in "Legends of Spoken Word." That same year she was invited to do a TED Talk for CalgaryCommunicationFinding your Path. Of the beat tradition, in 1989 Sheri-D studied at Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, in Boulder, Colorado.

EYEDA SOPHIA is a 20 year old MC and spoken word poet from Toronto, Ontario.

She was first introduced to spoken word at 16, attending Toronto Poetry Slam to compete and watch others perform. In the passing years, Eyeda has competed at Brave New Voices international youth poetry festival 2013 and 2014 and Canada's very own, Youth Can Slam 2013 and 2014.

Eyeda's inspiration thrives through her love of music and Hip Hop. Quick wordplay and crafty tongue twisters give her poetry a distinct rhythm and flow. Aside from music, her BTdot teammates continue to inspire her artistic growth.

Accessibility:

The venue is wheelchair accessible power chairs fit. There is one small step at the front of the restaurant, but staff bring out a small ramp to access the venue without problem.

Stage area is in the back of the restaurant.

Washrooms are on the main level, but unfortunately are not wheelchair accessible.
