Ole Schrøder is fascinated by the power and the potential that anthropogenic nature generates. In 2012, he and Flemming Rafn Thomsen founded the firm TREDJE NATUR, a Danish office that bridges nature, planning, and architecture.

With extensive experience in urban design, landscape optimization, sustainable building design, climate adaptation, and planning, Schrøder and Rafn Thomsen work to dissolve the entrenched divisions between city and nature. Spurred by climate change and expanding urban populations, TREDJE NATURE — which translates to “Third Nature” — invests its skills in the development of a new type of urban nature, one that does not consider building and biology to be in opposition.

Recent projects include the design of Copenhagen Harbor’s “Blue Plan,” which includes transforming the former industrial harbour into a recreational, educational, and ecologically friendly area, and the redesign of Copenhagen’s Saint Kjeld’s Quarter into “the world’s first climate-adapted neighbourhood,” allowing it to better adapt to increased flooding caused by heavy rainstorms. This project was listed in 2013’s Sustania 100, a guide to 100 sustainable solutions from around the world. The City of Copenhagen hired TREDJE NATUR as advisors after the firm won the 2011 Europan architecture competition. A broad spectrum of green climate adaptation technologies and components are currently in the pipeline.

Ole graduated in 2004 from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture. Before founding TREDJE NATUR, he worked at the Dutch architectural firm MVRDV in Rotterdam and later PLOT Architects. In 2006, he joined the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) in Copenhagen. As many of our speakers attract capacity crowds, we recommend that you arrive early to avoid disappointment.
