Tracking Birds and Butterflies Across International Borders with Dr. Ryan Norris

Cost: Recommended Donation of $2- $5

Ages: 8+

Each year, billions of migratory organisms on our planet commute vast distances between their temperate breeding grounds and tropical overwintering habitats. Using a variety of tracking technologies, Dr. Ryan Norris will first share with you how we’ve uncovered some of these incredible migrations, including record-breaking, non-stop oceanic flights by songbirds weighing less than a couple of loonies. Second, using our research on the iconic monarch butterfly, Dr. Ryan Norris will show why tracking migratory animals over the course of their annual cycle is fundamental for understanding the effects of environment change and developing successful conservation plans.

Stay after the talk for a tour of OURSpace (our outdoor classroom and restoration area) followed by a bat walk in High Park! Learn how to use a bat monitor and borrow a monitor to discover if there are bats in your neighborhood.
