Toronto Summer Music Festival

The Modern Age celebrates the music of the early 20th century. It is a fascinating period of wildly diverging artistic currents encompassing a remarkable variety of styles and genres of music featuring some of the greatest composers of the 20th century.

We will highlight the late blossoming musical Romanticism of Strauss and Mahler in Vienna, Ravel and Debussy in France, Rachmaninoff in Russia, Elgar and Vaughan-Williams in Britain. Simultaneous to the late Romantics, the early years of the Modern Age also revealed the singular, individual styles of Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and Bartok as well as being marked by the raucous, radical modernism of Schoenberg, Webern, and Berg.

With the advent of radio and phonograph came the birth of a recording industry that accompanied the ascension of popular music – Jazz and dance styles like the Charleston and Tango.

The Modern Age in music also witnessed a widening rift between Opera and Symphonic styles, which to this day, remain two worlds appealing to different publics.

In brief – this coming summer, we explore an incredibly rich diversity of musical currents and traditions with a star-studded roster of singers, instrumentalists, and ensembles including the Toronto Symphony in their first-ever appearance at Koerner Hall!

Ticket prices ranging from $20-$99. http://performance.rcmusic.ca/performance-all?season[0]=1416
