Rinaldo Walcott: Black Carnival in the 21st Century History and Practice
Free
Caribana is truly a great party. It celebrates the Caribbean roots of much Black culture in Toronto as well as the emancipation from slavery. University of Toronto Professor Rinaldo Walcott will put Caribana into its historical and contemporary, cultural and social contexts. It originated in colonial times when the white masters permitted a day of celebration. The social order was subverted, the Masters were lampooned, and black consciousness and community gradually emerged.
