Whether you know him as a pianist, bassist or bar-side conversationalist, you will know that Richard Whiteman is always up for learning something new. Four years after the release of his first bass album, and eighth overall recording, Richard has been working on a jazz quintet project focused on new music written with the intent of not leaning on any chordal instruments such as piano and guitar.

For Richard, the formation of the Slash and Burn Quintet evolved naturally through a long series of projects and working relationships. Of his players, Richard says “Musicians are too often caged lions, full of talent, but not presented with enough opportunities to fully express it. I have composed most of the pieces with these particular three horn players in mind, creating ample space for them to really play and allow their musical personalities to be set free and expressed to their fullest potential.”

The Quintet is comprised of Richard Whiteman (Bass), Jake Wilkinson (Trumpet), Trevor Hogg (Tenor Sax), William Carn (Trombone), Morgan Childs (Drums). On Friday, October 21 you can see these the well-versed musicians unleash their caged instincts to Richard’s newest compositions at Gallery 345 on Sorauren Ave.
