Reel Asian Retro Summer at TIFF Bell Lightbox -- AUGUST 25th

At the beginning of the summer, Reel Asian International Film Festival asked audience to vote for their favourite “retro” Asian films with the promise that we would program the top vote-getters. After 2 weeks of public voting, the public decided on Better Luck Tomorrow.

BETTER LUCK TOMORROW - A group of over-achieving Asian-American high school seniors enjoy a power trip when they dip into extra-curricular criminal activities. #StarringJohnCho (Star Trek, Harold & Kumar) and Sung Kang (Fast & Furious franchise), this film was director Justin Lin’s breakout hit before reigniting the Fast & Furious and Star Trek franchises.

This film was famously defended by the great Roger Ebert when he called out a rude audience member at Sundance, “This film has the right to be about this people, and Asian-Americans have the right to be whatever the hell they want to be. They do not have to ‘represent’ their people.”
