THE FIFTH ANNUAL QUEERING BLACK HISTORY MONTH TALK

We are very excited to host the 5th Annual Queering Black History Month event on Friday, February 27th, 2015!

Queering Black History Month aspires to re-insert the lives, experiences and achievements of queer and trans African, Black and Caribbean people. Its a time for us to reflect, celebrate, honour and complicate all the magic that is cultivated in our various communities.

dbi.young anitafrika is an internationally celebrated African-Jamaican-Canadian dubpoet, monodramatist, educator and mother to her sons moon and phoenix. She is the published author of two collections of poetry, eight plays, two dubpoetry albums, and The Sankofa Trilogy. dbi. is the recipient of two Dora Mavor Moore Awards, the K.M. Hunter Theatre Award, Toronto Mayors Arts Council Award, the Women of Resilience Award, the Canadian Poet of Honor Award and the Best Spoken Word Artist Award. She is the Artistic Director of YEMOYA International Artist Residency and the originator of the Sorplusi Method. dbi. is also the Program Designer and Facilitator of the Arts, Activism and AIDS Academy a recent project of the Stephen Lewis Foundation and the Director of The Artist Shaman Project: Sacred Gatherings at The Crossroads of Personal, the Political, and the Spiritual in Wimmins heArt and Health. Her storytelling and mentorship have taken her to Africa, the Caribbean, South Asia, North America, Europe and the United Nations, where she has shared her passion for equality and integrity with all whom she meets. dbi.s latest offering is her new school, WATAH womb arts healing, based in Toronto Canada, where she teaches arts-based courses aimed at self-actualization towards global mobilization.

Tiq Milan is the Senior Media Strategist of National News at GLAAD. Before joining GLAAD, Tiq was a mentor and teacher at the Hetrick-Martin Institute, an LGBT youth service organization. He was featured in a national media campaign for Live Out Loud's Homecoming Project, is a contributing author to the anthology Trans Bodies, Trans Selves, and is the Co-Chair for the LGBT taskforce of the National Association of Black Journalists. He has done on-air interviews for CNN,BlackEnterprise.com, Al Jazeera America, MTV, Huff Post Live and MSNBC. He has penned articles for BET.com, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, The Source, Vibe and others on issues facing the LGBT movement. He has been featured as a Black LGBT leader on Ebony.com and BET.com. Tiq is the former editor-in-chief of IKONS magazine, an LGBT pop culture magazine, and has been a freelance pop culture journalist for several years, interviewing people from like Jay-Z to Cicely Tyson. He documented his transition in the films U People and Realness.

With nearly a decade of experience in the not-for profit and social services sector, Pastor Peart has worked in numerous settings from front line mental health, project and program coordination, research and evaluation, organizational consultation, and has published and presented internationally.

Of his most recent recognitions, David was named as one of Whos Who in Black Canada and was recipient of the Toronto Community Foundation 2010/2011 Vital People Award for his contributions to the social service sector. Drawing on his expertise in counselling, coaching, and consulting Pastor Pearts interest is in working with individuals and organizations on building their capacity to produce at optimum levels.

Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, Chiedza Pasipanodya is an artist, healer and educator interested in community, the sacred and the nature of creative expression. As an artist her choice of medium is always malleable based on the message, with a keen interest in the human body, quiet liminal spaces and the natural world. Her aesthetic is made up of simplified forms, layering and a sophisticated use of colour and line.
