No Lights No Lycra - Week Night Dance Party In The Dark

Have you ever wished for an opportunity to dance, minus the judgment, minus the alcohol, minus the awkward-dance-circles, minus zumba, minus the uninvited grinding, minus skin-tight-spandex, minus the pretentious playlists, minus the lights? (but still included all the dorky tracks you dance to in your bedroom?)

No Lights No Lycra is a dimly-lit one-hour dance party for the love of dancing. It puts the joy back in to grooving by keeping the lights down and taking the focus off the performance. You can feel the energy of the people around you, but you can barely make out their moves, let alone notice your own. It's a safe, no-drug and no-alcohol event where participants dance independently. Every one's welcome to attend and you can wear whatever makes you feel comfortable (yes, even lycra). And it's only five bucks.

No Lights No Lycra Toronto is held EVERY MONDAY at The 8.0.5 - Downstairs at Dovercourt House, just off Bloor. Lights off, music on between 715 and 830PM

Latecomers are welcome, $5 on the door

Don't know what NLNL is?

What is NLNL? It's a few things.

- It's like a dance party, without the bullshit.

- It's a place for people to come and dance freely in a friendly, non-threatening, drug and alcohol free atmosphere.

- It's a place where you'll hear anything and everything from 80's pop, to rock, to swing, to tribal drumming, and everything in between. We like to keep it cheesy and happy.

-It's held in a dimly lit room so that you can bust out whatever moves you like, with out the worry of anyone watching.

- it's a time to dance independently in the company of others – in order for people to truly lose themselves in the music it is important to keep talking to a minimum.

- it's not about technique and being a ‘good’ dancer, it’s about the experience of dancing with no one watching and the joy that this brings.

- it's a place to exercise at your own pace while having fun.

- it promotes a healthy mind and a healthy body.

- it's about making dance accessible for everyone.

- it's an inclusive event – open to all ages, genders, backgrounds and demographics.

-it's a place to shake out the stresses of the week, let go of your inhibitions and completely be yourself.

The No Lights No Lycra movement started in Melbourne, and is now packed to the brim in Chicago, NY, Vancouver, Christchurch, Sydney, London, Los Angeles and more.

No Lights No Lycra is an dance community that started in Melbourne by unruly dance students Alice Glenn and Heidi Barrett in 2009. There is no light, no lycra, no teacher, no steps to learn, no technique, just free movement. NLNL is a space where you can completely let go, shake out the stresses of the week, and lose yourself in the music and the physicality of your body. NLNL is a daggy, non-pretentious place to completely be yourself.

“This is a pure and spiritual experience, releasing that urge to shake and doing it without dealing with the social nuances of dancing in public”
