New Music Concerts presents From Atlantic Shores

New Music Concerts (Robert Aitken artistic director), welcomes in the New Year with fresh breezes From Atlantic Shores, a concert of original works written for the East Coast’s premiere contemporary music group, Motion Ensemble on January 19, 2014 at The Music Gallery. Three generations of maritime composers are represented in recent works ranging from songs for soprano and clarinet to full ensemble pieces with flute, clarinet, violin, contrabass, percussion and electronics. From the nakedly transparent songs for voice and clarinet of The Grand-Pré Project: …between the shore and the ships… by JUNO-winning composer Derek Charke and Tout passe by Sandy Moore, to the intriguing Variations on a Theme by McCartney by WL. Altman, the evening spotlights the remarkable talent of fellow musicians from the Maritimes in an intimate, congenial atmosphere.

Motion Ensemble (Karin Aurell, flutes; Richard Hornsby, clarinets; Nadia Francavilla, violin; Andrew Miller, contrabass; D’Arcy P. Gray, percussion/electronics; Helen Pridmore, soprano) is a chamber music group based in New Brunswick, Canada. Their repertoire is an eclectic mix of post-classical and experimental music. Motion’s music often utilizes electronics or visual media. The group has been presenting its own concerts since 1998, now with a series in Saint John called Open Arts and additional concerts in Sackville, Moncton and Fredericton; they also reach thousands of school children through their educational projects.
