Paul Negoescu swells the ranks of neo-Rohmerians. Dan Sallitt

In spite of the 'exotic' title, Paul Negoescu's A Month in Thailand, has a very specific Romanian flavour and the young director's voice is very fresh in the context of other local productions: the past is forgotten and while the small budget brings a certain minimalism in the way the subject is approached, the result is quite new and different.

The story focuses on Radu, a young guy who gets ready to spend the New Year's Eve with his girlfriend Adina and other friends. She is in love with him, but something stops Radu loving her in return. While at a supermarket, he thinks he sees a former girlfriend, and this makes him take surprising decisions regarding his future.

While not a love story, A Month in Thailand pushes the right buttons and turns out to be much more than a film about 'a guy who dumps his girlfriend'. It's about regrets, hope and courage. It's about lust for life and maturity. It's about that nagging feeling that we have made a mistake and we must do anything in our power to get things right, before it's too late.

Born in 1984 in Bucharest, Paul Negoescu graduated from film directing at the National University of Film and Drama in 2007. He directed several short films that were selected in over 270 film festivals and won 30 awards. His latest short film, Horizon, was selected in Cannes, in the Semaine de la Critique competition. His previous three short films Derby, Renovation and Late were selected in the Berlinale Shorts. He won awards in Bristol Encounters IFF, Vila do Conde, Dresden, New York, Belgrade or Sofia.
