Living Joyfully - An Introduction to Buddhism - FREE Seminar

April 27, 2015, Lillian H. Smith Public Library, 239 College St. from 6:30 – 7:30 pm…

Come join us as we present ‘Living Joyfully’ the next in a series of free introductory seminars on Buddhism. Each seminar will begin with a presentation and follow with an open Q & A.

Buddhist practice is a dynamic journey of development and discovery that continually reinforces the enlightened life-state inherent in each of our lives. As this inner state is strengthened, we develop a fortitude, which enables us to ride even the wildest storms and joyfully surf the waves of difficulty, creating something of value out of any situation.

Along the way we lessen our attachment to our smaller self and become increasingly aware of the interconnectedness of all life. This dynamic journey leads us to vast reserves of courage, compassion, wisdom and life force inherent within us and enables us to realize that genuine joy lies not in simply being able to overcome one's own suffering but in helping others to do the same. It is the simple orientation of our hearts that ultimately determines whether we create societies characterized by joy and dignity or crippled by conflict, fear and despair.

In the words of Daisaku Ikeda, president of Soka Gakkai International, “What is true joy in life? This is a difficult question and one that has occupied a great many thinkers and philosophers. Joy can quickly give way to suffering. Joy is short and suffering long. The key then lies in cultivating a state of mind where we can declare without reservation that life itself is a joy. This is the purpose of our Buddhist practice.”

Soka Gakkai International (SGI) is a lay Buddhist movement linking more than 12 million people around the world. SGI practitioners aim to create value in any circumstances and contribute to the wellbeing of others. Their practice sparks a process of ongoing inner transformation and empowerment known as "human revolution." The promotion of peace, culture and education is central to SGI's activities.
