LIFT Summer 2015 Panel Discussion: Visual Storytelling from DIY to DIWO

Join us for a panel discussion with independent filmmaking teams—producer/director and director/editor who will discuss different modes of independent production. Panelists will share their DIY (Do It Yourself) experience, as well as making the transition to DIWO (Do It With Others). Projects of different scale present their own challenges and freedoms, learn how these filmmaking teams balance the budget while maintaining their creative vision. Topics of discussion will include developing a distinct aesthetic, choosing equipment, and building a team.

Panelists include Igor Drljača, Albert Shin, Kazik Radwanski and Ajla Odobašić.

Moderated by Kiva Reardon.

KIVA REARDON is the founding editor of cléo, a journal of film and feminism (www.cleojournal.com). Her writing has appeared in Cineaste, The Globe and Mail, National Post, The A.V. Club, and others. She previously worked at the DOC Institute (wwww.docinstitute.com) in industry programming and is currently a Programming Associate at TIFF (www.tiff.net).

FILMMAKING TEAM OF IGOR DRLJAČA AND ALBERT SHIN OF TIMELAPSE PICTURES

Timelapse Pictures is a production company based in Toronto, Canada founded by filmmakers Igor Drljača and Albert Shin. Having completed three features films and nearly a dozen short films, it has quickly become a leading artist oriented production company in Toronto, focusing on local and international films. www.timelapsepictures.ca

Born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Igor Drljača moved to Canada in 1993 due to the wars in former Yugoslavia. He completed his Master's in Film Production at York University's graduate program in 2011. He runs the production company TimeLapse Pictures with York Alumn Albert Shin. He is the recipient of the K.M. Hunter Artist Award for media arts. His award winning shorts include Woman in "Purple" (2010), and "The Fuse: Or How I Burned Simon Bolivar" (2011), which have screened at hundreds of festivals. His critically acclaimed feature film "Krivina" (2012) premiered at TIFF and screened at dozens of international festivals. In 2014 he co-produced Albert Shin's TIFF 2014 favorite "In Her Place," which received seven Canadian Screen Award nominations. He is in post-production on his sophomore feature "The Waiting Room," which will be released this year. His third feature film, "Tabija," which is in development, received Rotterdam Film Festival's Cinemart Eurimages Prize and was also selected for the prestigious Cannes Film Festival's L'Atelier program.

Albert Shin graduated from York University with a B.F.A. in Film and Video Production in 2006 and directed his debut feature, "Point Traverse" in 2010. Since then, he produced Igor Drljaca's "Krivina" (2012), which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) before returning to the director’s chair for his second-feature, "In Her Place" (2014). "In Her Place" went on to receive seven Canadian Screen Award nominations including Best Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay. Albert was the 2015 recipient of the Jay Scott Prize for Emerging Artist by the Toronto Film Critics Association.

FILMMAKING TEAM OF KAZIK RADWANSKI AND AJLA ODOBAŠIĆ OF MDFF

MDFF stands for Medium Density Fibreboard Films. Born in 1985 in Toronto, Kazik Radwanski studied filmmaking at Ryerson University and co-founded the production company MDFF. His short films screened at the Berlinale Shorts Competition for three consecutive years. In 2012 Radwanski directed his first feature film "Tower" which had its world premiere at the 65th Locarno International Film Festival. The film went on to screen at many festivals including The Toronto International Film Festival, The Viennale, and New Directors/New Films presented by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

Ajla Odobašić is a video editor and multidisciplinary maker. She studied fine art at Central Technical School and completed her BFA in film production at Ryerson University in 2008. Ajla has been editing Kazik Radwanski's films since 2006, and most recently worked with Igor Drljača on his second upcoming feature "The Waiting Room," as well as with Sam C. Avery on his feature-length debut "Minor" (in post-production). Alongside editing, she has made several collage-influenced soundtracks and set designs for the films of R. Bruce Elder. Her own short non-narrative films have screened at the the WNDX Festival of Avant-garde Film, the Leeds International Film Festival, the EXiS Festival, and at the TIFF Free Screen, among others.
