Minnelli is American cabaret songstress Sally Bowles, an aspiring actress obsessed with movie stardom. In the waning days of the notorious Weimar Republic, Bowles befriends and beds—albeit with notable complications—visiting Cambridge student Brian Roberts (Michael York). Attempting to broaden his horizons with her Bohemian, decadent lifestyle, Bowles embarks on a mission to make life beautiful for the both of them. “Literate, bawdy, sophisticated, sensual, cynical, heart-warming, and disturbingly thought-provoking” (Roger Ebert), CABARET revels in decadence and excess, while simultaneously representing the dark undercurrent that led to the rise of fascism.
