Ladies of Burlesque presents: CABARET at The Royal!

“I'm going to be a great film star! That is, if booze and sex don't get me first…” --Sally Bowles

“Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome” to Weimar Germany’s infamous Kit Kat Klub, where “life is beautiful” and pleasure reigns supreme. The first musical to receive an “X” certificate, CABARET is a key Queer text—one which celebrates ambiguous sexuality and revels in unconventional pairings. With the Bob Fosse behind the camera and Liza Minnelli in front, CABARET is simply legendary. Written by Kander and Ebb, its songs—including “Willkommen,” “Mein Herr,” and “Maybe This Time”—revolutionized the movie musical and brought a darker, more socially-conscious tone to what was formerly a PG genre.

Awarded with eight Academy Awards, including a much deserved Best Actress for Minnelli, CABARET is a cinematic event—one that can only be executed to full effect on the big screen. And with a seriously sinful Liza-inspired burlesque performance from Laura Desiree, “The Big City Kitty,” you won’t want to miss out!

Minnelli is American cabaret songstress Sally Bowles, an aspiring actress obsessed with movie stardom. In the waning days of the notorious Weimar Republic, Bowles befriends and beds—albeit with notable complications—visiting Cambridge student Brian Roberts (Michael York). Attempting to broaden his horizons with her Bohemian, decadent lifestyle, Bowles embarks on a mission to make life beautiful for the both of them. “Literate, bawdy, sophisticated, sensual, cynical, heart-warming, and disturbingly thought-provoking” (Roger Ebert), CABARET revels in decadence and excess, while simultaneously representing the dark undercurrent that led to the rise of fascism.
