The Summer of Sangailė
Dir. Alanté Kavaïté
France/Lithuania/Netherlands 2014 (88:00)
Winner of one of Sundance Festival’s most prestigious directing prizes, The Summer of Sangailė is a delicately layered story of tender self-discovery and rapturous first love.
The seventeen-year-old Sangailė dreams of flight. She is fascinated by stunt planes, but is secretly paralyzed by her fear of heights. At an aeronautical show near her parents’ lakeside villa, the shy Sangailė meets Auste, a perky, free-spirited local girl. As their summer romance begins, they let go of fear and doubt and give in to hormones and temptation.
The Summer of Sangailė is driven by the sensuous imagery of summer love and the poetic dreams of tomorrow. It is a coming-of-age film that is at once exhilarating, honest and intoxicating.
