Holocaust Education Week 2015: Sephardic Jews in the Balkans

In 1492, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella expelled the Jews of Spain. Many went to Portugal, North Africa, and Amsterdam, but the majority went East, to the Ottoman Empire, where they were welcomed.

Dr. Lauren Granite, US Education Director for Centropa and Educator-in-Residence for HEW 2015, talks about the history of Sephardic Jews in the Balkans, what happened to those communities during the Holocaust, and how a small group of Holocaust survivors and their children looked back on their years of co-existence with others to choose a path other than hate when confronted with yet another ethnic war.
