Opera and electronics, old and new, bold and subtle

Saxophonist Chelsea Shanoff played in the first ever Emergents show three years ago and since then she has established herself as a highly regarded performer and teacher in Toronto. Her two subsequent shows at the Music Gallery were notable for their outstanding curation of fresh works by contemporary local composers, and we are thrilled that shes lent her vision to this years Emergents series.

Emergents III will be a night of contrasts and similarities. FAWN Opera & New Music is a collective dedicated to presenting the work of emerging musical and visual Canadian artists. The FAWN Opera series is a collaboration between FAWN and up-and-coming composers to create world-premiere contemporary chamber operas. Their Synesthesia concerts, programmed in art galleries, have acted as previews for their forthcoming opera productions by combining musical and visual elements. FAWN will present excerpts of two of their produced operas by David Foley and Adam Scime, along with a work by composer Cecilia Livingston, who is writing an opera for their 2014/15 season.

Toronto composer Michael Vincent will also be writing an opera for FAWNs upcoming season. Michael is a recent graduate from the U of T doctoral composition program and his compositions encompass a wide spectrum including concert music, contemporary dance productions, large-scale operas and multi-media productions. Some of his most noted projects include collaborations with the Juno award-nominated Orchid Ensemble, Canadian author Douglas Coupland, and composer John Oswald. In this set, Michael will present a selection of his compositions, including two new works which explore the outer reaches of the piano by featuring electronics, pre-recorded media, and prepared piano.
