“......her understanding of the music shone throughout.” ~Jim Lowe, Times Argus review (November 2010)

Violist Elizabeth Reid's exciting and uniquely personal musical style has become an integral part of the Northern New England classical concert scene. Her playing has been described as having a “deep and expressive sound” and a “natural musicality.” (Times Argus).

A native of Hamilton, Ontario, Ms. Reid received bachelor and master’s degrees in viola performance at the Western University in London, Ontario and an artist diploma from the Glenn Gould Professional School, Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Her main teachers included Kosha Braun, Lorand Fenyves, Ralph Aldrich, and Rennie Regehr. She also attended masterclasses at Banff, Orford, and Bowdoin. Ms. Reid was fortunate to receive coaching from flautist and pianist Louis Moyse in Montpelier, Vermont during the last three years of his life. She has performed across North America including the Arts and Letters Club and the Music Gallery in Toronto, Hertz Hall in Berkeley, California, and the Southern Illinois Chamber Music Society. Ms. Reid has also played principal viola in the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra, the Banff Opera Orchestra, and the National Orchestral Institute.

In Vermont Ms. Reid is a familiar face on the concert stage, appearing on various music series as a soloist and chamber musician. She has performed regularly at Dartmouth College, Paine Mountain Arts, Cathedral Arts, and Capital City Concerts. As a chamber musician, she is a member of the Cerutti-Reid Duo with the pianist Alison Bruce Cerutti, ARIOSO, the Passeri Trio, and the Northern Third Piano Quartet.

Ms. Reid has a strong interest in contemporary music and has been involved in various premieres of solo and chamber works in Canada and the United States. Her viola sound and engaging playing has inspired many composers to write works for her and her chamber groups. Recently she has premiered works of Erik Nielsen, Dennis Báthory-Kitsz, Jacob Morton-Black, Kathy Wonson Eddy, and Lydia Lowery Busler, all of these works written specifically for her. She is proud of her involvement and performances with MUSIC-Comp, an Vermont-based organization that mentors young composers to write for professional musicians.

Ms. Reid is currently principal violist of the Middlebury Opera Orchestra. She is also a member of the Burlington Chamber Orchestra as well as playing regularly with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Green Mountain Opera Orchestra, the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra, New York Chamber Soloists and Capital City Concerts.
