Gnosis is a must-see event; a unique artistic experience from one of the foremost innovators in jazz today.

ECM recording artist and former Torontonian David Virelles takes Cuban music places its never been. He is capable of tropically intense polyrhythms and irregular but internally logical phrasing, which befits an artist who came to jazz through Thelonious Monk, Andrew Hill, and Bud Powell. Since moving to New York about 5 years ago, David has worked with Henry Threadgill, Andrew Cyrille, and many more.

David returns to Toronto with an ambitious project for which Virelles specifically sought out the Music Gallery to produce the North American premiere of his large scale composition entitled Gnosis. We are partnering with Arraymusic to bring this incredible music to North America for its World premiere!

This work marks the very first time that Abaku drums have ever been used in a chamber setting. Virelles incorporates percussive vocabulary with chamber instrumentation of the Array Ensemble and a kaleidoscope of orchestral and folkloric percussion, featuring master drummer Romn Daz. Accompanied and augmented by visual elements, this will be a seismic event for creative music in Canada in 2015.

David will invoke the spirits at the beginning each evening with a set of his Cuban solo piano collection f.
