David Merritt : saer
Opening Reception: Saturday 7 June, 2-5pm
Artist in attendance
Jessica Bradley is pleased to present David Merritts third solo exhibition with the gallery, featuring sisal sculpture, work on paper and video.
Merritts delicate drawings and sisal rope sculptures belie their rigorous conceptual framework, in which language plays a central role. Over the last decade, he has collected extensive lists of the titles of popular songs, which he groups into words evocative of recurring cultural themes such as the familiar recurring words beautiful or oh. Mapped visually in fluttering grade-school cursive, the original signification of these words breaks down, reforming in associative and surprising clusters of meaning. In a new suite of watercolours derived from a long list of collected graffiti tags, Merritt plays with the phonetic similarities of these invented words, such as saer and sayer; rekt and wrecked.
