Conversation with LOUIS KAPLAN and MARCUS BOON

Please join Louis Kaplan U of T Professor of History and Theory of Photography and New Media and Marcus Boon York University Professor of English in a conversation about the meaning and use of photography in Beat culture with particular reference to the work of Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and Robert Frank and in an exploration of the significance of a number of frames e.g., Buddhist, queer, countercultural that provide us with a better understanding of Beat photography. Themes to be discussed include the poetics and politics of friendship, the role of the camera in fostering Beat community, the complex relationship of the Beats to media technology, the relationship between text and image, and the Beats as progenitors of indie capitalism and the world of social media.

Screening of PULL MY DAISY

Join us for a screening of Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie's iconic portrait of the Beat Generation, Pull My Daisy 1959, 30 mins. The film is narrated by Jack Kerouac and features Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky, and Gregory Corso.

The Politics and Poetics of Visibility is a weekly event series occasioned by the fall exhibitions program at the University of Toronto Art Centre and the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery. The Politics and Poetics of Visibility features an international and interdisciplinary program of lectures, discussions, performances, and screenings on the subject of queer politics, self-representation, and social justice.
