Elizabeth McComb grew up in Cleveland (Ohio) in an African-American family that originally came from Mississippi.Liz started singing at an early age for her congregation, and three of her sisters formed a vocal group called The Daughters of Zion, which all contributed to her love for singing. She first learned her favourite gospel singers’ repertory by heart: The Staple Singers, Roebuck Staples, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and above all Mahalia Jackson. Her brother, jazz trumpet, introduced her to the great jazz musicians. Her very first instrument was the violin, but she quickly started learning piano on her own. First member of the “Jean Austin Singers”, Liz was also one of the original members of the “Roots of Rock'n'Roll” group who toured throughout Europe. After coming to Paris, thanks to Maurice Cullaz, Liz McComb became part of the « Psalms » quartet in 1987, with organist Jerome Van Jones, singer Lavelle McKinnie Dugan and pianist Gregg Hunterwith whom she started a duet with and released an album rewarded with the Mahalia Jackson Award. Twenty years ago, Liz met a French producer, Gerard Vacher, who changed her career. A hard worker, she has been celebrated and rewarded with, among others, the Mahalia Jackson Award, the Jazz Victory Award, Ensound Music Awards.
