#BlackLivesMatter: A Toronto Conversation

As part of the Black Lives Matter Freedom Ride to Ferguson, MO organized by Darnell L. Moore and Patrisse Marie Cullors-Brignac, Black activists and professionals volunteered from across the U.S and traveled to Ferguson during Labor Day weekend just three weeks after the fatal shooting of Mike Brown, for a national rally against police brutality and for a weekend of activism.

Four individuals from Canada Sarah Beech, David Lewis-Peart, Leo D. Edwards and Catherine Hernandez joined this Freedom Ride and returned home with a commitment to further the vision of the Black Lives Matter movement here at home.

This Saturday's community conversation, is one of many events occurring throughout the United States as part of the Black Lives Matter National Week of Action October 20-26. The intention of this Toronto gathering is to discuss individual, communal and systemic racism in Canada, beginning with the various ways we encounter anti-black behaviour/attitudes/practices and policies and the different ways society teaches us that black lives are not valued; from Ferguson to Toronto and beyond. This discussion and community think-tank will be the first of many convenings with the intention of collectively strategizing and shifting the lens - Black Lives Matter. Its not a moment its a movement.
