Andres Vosu: From the Pages of My Adult Colouring Book

Adult Colouring Books, which offer a wide choice in line art content, give adults an outlet to enjoy the pleasurable childhood activity of colouring. The book supplies the lines; the adult colours inside and/or outside the lines.

The pages of Andres Vosu’s Adult Colouring Book deviate from commercially produced Adult Colouring Books, in that, as the artist, he created both the lines and executed the colouring.

The line art for From the Pages of My Adult Colouring Book is graphically simple. Only two elements were used. A circle and a trapezoid, which in relationship to each other, create stylized male and female forms. The juxtaposition and repetition of these forms produce graphic and thematic expressions.

Adult Colouring Books are marketed with the promise that “ the simple meditative Act of colouring in lines on a page, can help to alleviate anxiety, sharpen concentration and cultivate a deep sense of calm.” *

Only the creation of the line art for, From the Pages of My Adult Colouring Book, helped the artist alleviate anxiety. It was cathartic, allowing the artist to graphically express his notions regarding human interactions, journeys as well as failings.

“ However, unlike the promise of Adult Colouring Books, the colouring of the work was far from being therapeutic. It was laborious and only offered numbing rather than a deep sense of calm. There was no diversion from worries due to personal problems, fascist politicians or a dying environment.” - AV
