Against the Grain Theatre presents: AYRE
CONCERT
"Jewish, Arabic and Spanish elements come together in Osvaldo Golijov's inspired salmagundi of songs drenched in folk and pop traditions of the Mediterranean, from danceable laptop-powered grooves to radiant slow songs full of yearning."
A lush fusion of Arabic, Hebrew, Sardinian, and Sephardic folk melodies and texts, Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov’s AYRE is a thrill to experience and a brilliant example of 21st-century cultural counterpoint.
Golijov's AYRE — meaning "air" or "melody" in medieval Spanish — largely centers on southern Spain with its intermingling of three cultures (Christian, Arab and Jewish) in an era before the expulsion of the Jews in the late 15th-century.
PERFORMED BY:
Lebanese-Canadian soprano Miriam Khalil
and 11 world-class instrumentalists
With: The Glenn Gould School String Quartet and sopranos Ellen McAteer and Adanya Dunn, who open the first half of the program with three works by Golijov
