Food Truck Eats to make Nuit Blanche more appetizing

Posted by Derek Flack / September 12, 2011

Food Trucks Nuit Blanche TorontoAlthough a host of cafes and restaurants tend to extend their hours to service the rumbling stomachs of Nuit Blanche-goers, the food options for 2011 just got a lot more enticing. Having announced the full line-up for the third installment of Food Truck Eats today, the October 1st event will bring lots of late night eats to those wandering the streets for Toronto's annual all-night art affair. And, yes it does indeed run all night long — from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Given that there are only three Nuit Blanche exhibits at the Distillery District, the food truck festival will remain something of a destination, likely drawing folks from the main exhibition areas at the end of their nocturnal explorations. One could also make a mid-night stop to re-fuel, but the prospect of line-ups and a full stomach might be enough to kill the will to continue art-exploring.

Check out the event page for a list of the participating trucks and vendors, and let us know in the comments if you plan on making this a part of your night on October 1st.

Who is going to venture all the way from the locations of Nuit Blanche to the Distillery District for food trucks? You do enough walking just to see the exhibits for Nuit Blanche as it is. I doubt that the food trucks will see that much action from Nuit Blanche attendees.

Not worth the trek and time it would take getting there to miss the actual zones during Nuite Blanche.

The Distillery district was a great stop on our NB a few years ago. Lots of art galleries/spaces, performers and outdoor exhibits and was fairly crowded (although not downtown-crowded, thankfully)

Food trucks? Count me in. Especially if it means an excuse to avoid the transit disaster around city hall area that happens every NB.

@AV - I would guess the food trucks are a better draw than most of the Nuite Blanche installations. Many would rather go to the food trucks in the Distillery and miss some of the Nuite Blanche zones than the other way around.

I will be going around on my bike with friends. This is easily accessible.

Really? I beg to differ. Nuite happens once a year, food trucks are now quite common and are fast becomming the next tapas, gastro-pub, etc... Its a fad now, but once the city formally licenses them they'll be all to commonplace. Nothing exciting about that.

Here's an idea for all you potatoes out there. Why not have the trucks move around the city during Nuit Blanche? That is the whole point of them being food trucks isn't it? If not they are just food stands all bunched together in one area...if you use those four things on the bottom of the truck called wheels you could spread them out in the different zones.

I agree with MrPotato, why do they have to be cramped into one small area? They're trucks for goodness sakes! I live in one of the distillery condos and to think that I have to listen to noisy crowds from dusk till dawn is annoying. I'm all for food trucks in the city but it should be in a more "natural" way, not an organized noisy chaos.
I dont mean to be the NIMBY type but it's just a bit much.

This is the third installment of the Food Truck Eats series, which has taken place in the Distillery District on both prior occasions. We would LOVE to use our wheels and drive around the city, but unfortunately the existing bylaws prohibit trucks from parking on public property, and even from parking on private property within the downtown zone. The whole point of the Food Truck Eats series is to showcase the potential of street food in Toronto, after the disaster that was A la Carte.

Whether you think food trucks are a fad or not, there is a huge demand for street food in this city, and we are simply working to make it accessible. There are several Nuit Blanche installations and exhibits in the Distillery District this year, and we are excited to have the opportunity to join forces and feed the NB crowds. Hope to see you there!

Does anyone know which of these trucks/vendors offer vegetarian and vegan options? Nuit-Blanche attendees tend to be disproportionately young and/or progressive, and so disproportionately veggie (behold the fact that veggie-dogs usually sell out early in the night at the hotdog carts, something I learned the hard way).

Although I don't know the exact menus for this event.I do know that Bonfire Catering offers a vegetarian wood fired pizza, Gorilla Cheese offers a veg grilled cheese option, El Gastronomo usually does and New Dog offers fare such as falafel and the likes, as well as a few of the truckless vendors in the past have had numerous vegetarian dishes.

What a shame that city hall has to be so difficult. I watch Street Eats on the Food Network which follows different trucks in various cities across the US and you should see some of the yummy stuff that comes out of them.
Is there anything that can be done to change these by-laws?
It must be very frustrating for you!

Would have liked to see this around the city too. Would have been a perfect chance to get an "exception" to the by-law for one night as part of the Nuit Blanche events.

Is this event officially sanctioned by Nuit Blanche organizers? Will it be promoted by them? Second Harvest mentioned that it was in conjunction with Nuit Blanche but I don't think it is officially sponsored or promoted at all by them are they?
