Toronto Gets Its First Chili's
Of all the American restaurant chains, Chili's is my favourite (which may not actually be saying much because I can't think of another one I would eat at). I first discovered it back in the '90s on a trip to Arizona and quickly warmed up to their big portions, and relatively cheap southwestern-inspired menu. I've always wondered why there wasn't a Chili's in Toronto but now I need not spend sleepness nights pondering over this puzzle any longer - Chili's will be opening their first Toronto location on May 19th.
Sort of. Like other recent chain debuts such as Anthropologie and McNally Robinson, Chili's has opted to forgo opening in high-priced real estate downtown in favour of, wait for it, a spot in the Colossus Centre in Vaughan. Because, ya know, there's nothing like filling up on beans and back ribs before settling in for the latest Hollywood schlock.
Follow along as they get set to open via their Chili's Ontario Twitter. Also, I'm told they plan to open four additional GTA locations by 2014.

(I hate big-box restaurants)

You'll notice that it's a Winnipeg-based independent bookseller... it's largest store is still its flagship, and its second location recently moved to a larger location there. A whole *four* current locations, including Saskatoon, with the smallest being in New York City where it's still run by a McNally family member.
And you may want to rephrase your sentence where you imply that McNally Robinson is opening up in Vaughan... Don Mills is many things, but it ain't Vaughan.
This site's editorial mandate is to cover local culture and businesses but that doesn't mean we can't mention a chain store from time to time. IMO a huge American chain opening in Toronto is news, especially one as large as Chili's. I think it's actually quite notable they've taken so long to expand into this market.
As far as the downtown vs. Vaughan thing, the observation I was making was that a number of successful chain stores/restaurants, be they American or not, have decided to open their first Toronto location outside of the downtown core. I think this is notable. It would be as if Pages Bookstore decided to expand to the New York market but instead of opening in the lower east side or somewhere in Manhattan decided to open in New Jersey. And that's not knocking New Jersey. It would just be kinda strange.
What Jerrold was <a href="http://torontoist.com/2009/03/flogos_owns_the_sky.php#comment-1621964">commenting on</a> were the soap bubble men floating around the city.
I've never been to Chili's, but I think a famous U.S. chain making its way into our fair city is somewhat newsworthy. Just because something is attached to a wealthy corporate sugardaddy doesn't make it not worth profiling in a city blog. If that were the case, most events in the city should be ignored, by that logic.
Shame on you , i have lost quite a bit of respect for you as a blogger and fellow citizen.
You should have reported.. just how many pieces of "flare" does Chili's have??
DJ means Vaughan, of course the 905 will attract chains like Chili's, because of its current automobile-oriented development. Enjoy it while it lasts.
@DJ: hopefully this keeps those same 905'ers from packing the restaurants I love here in the 416 :).
We'll probably see a Chili's in 905 centric parts of downtown (Eaton Centre/Rogers Centre/John & Richmond) eventually. Course eventually can be a very long time - Panera still hasn't ventured into the core despite having a model that would seem to be a great fit.
Now, if you'd said GTA ....
Way to go Chili's!
Way to go Chili's!
As for the food: I had a fajita trio (steak, chicken, shrimp) and it was nicely spiced and plenty of food (free tortilla refills). I had a mini dessert in a shot glass and it was not so good. Their margarita's looked nice, but I didn't have one.
Would I go all the way to Vaughan to eat there? No. But if they had one downtown or midtown (where I live), I would go.
My guess is that they're expanding into Canada now cos it's a good time. US market collapsing, Canada not so much.

Yeah for Chili's.
