Toronto Gets Its First Chili's

Posted by Tim / April 17, 2009

Chili's Restaurant TorontoOf all the American restaurant chains, Chili's is my favourite (which may not actually be saying much because I can't think of another one I would eat at). I first discovered it back in the '90s on a trip to Arizona and quickly warmed up to their big portions, and relatively cheap southwestern-inspired menu. I've always wondered why there wasn't a Chili's in Toronto but now I need not spend sleepness nights pondering over this puzzle any longer - Chili's will be opening their first Toronto location on May 19th.

Sort of. Like other recent chain debuts such as Anthropologie and McNally Robinson, Chili's has opted to forgo opening in high-priced real estate downtown in favour of, wait for it, a spot in the Colossus Centre in Vaughan. Because, ya know, there's nothing like filling up on beans and back ribs before settling in for the latest Hollywood schlock.

Follow along as they get set to open via their Chili's Ontario Twitter. Also, I'm told they plan to open four additional GTA locations by 2014.

Love going to these chain theme restaurants, and looking around at the patrons, when I've rented a car and gone on the road. Reminds me why I ran away from Georgetown to Montreal, Tokyo then Toronto. Gawd!

BOOOO! Get out of town you too-bright, cheesy, multinational, American-born, cookie-cutter, corporate franchises!

Support the local economy!

Sincerely yours,

So, Tim, where'd you get that McNally Robinson is American? Did you even read the press release you referenced, because you obviously didn't get past the word 'California'.

Take a read: http://www.mcnallyrobinson.com/about

You'll notice that it's a Winnipeg-based independent bookseller... it's largest store is still its flagship, and its second location recently moved to a larger location there. A whole *four* current locations, including Saskatoon, with the smallest being in New York City where it's still run by a McNally family member.

And you may want to rephrase your sentence where you imply that McNally Robinson is opening up in Vaughan... Don Mills is many things, but it ain't Vaughan.

You know Tim, there is more to Toronto than Queen Street or Bloor Street. And while you seem to scoff at Chili's for opting for a suburban power centre instead of one of your hipster locales, I'm sure you would have been one of the first to scream "gentrification!" had they infact chosen one of your cooler-than-the-burbs neighbourhoods. There are some great things downtown, but there's a lot to be discovered north of Eglinton. People who don't think so really need to get over themselves.

So was Jerrold too busy bitching at Torontoist for writing about Cadbury eggs to apply his anti-shill policies here? Or when you guys used a Brick logo as the image in your last hiring recruitment post? I always knew he was full of shit, not that he doesn't frequently confirm it anyway

Wow. The vitriol. What do you think I'm trying to do here - use some subversive tactics to promote chain stores and getting kickbacks in return?

This site's editorial mandate is to cover local culture and businesses but that doesn't mean we can't mention a chain store from time to time. IMO a huge American chain opening in Toronto is news, especially one as large as Chili's. I think it's actually quite notable they've taken so long to expand into this market.

As far as the downtown vs. Vaughan thing, the observation I was making was that a number of successful chain stores/restaurants, be they American or not, have decided to open their first Toronto location outside of the downtown core. I think this is notable. It would be as if Pages Bookstore decided to expand to the New York market but instead of opening in the lower east side or somewhere in Manhattan decided to open in New Jersey. And that's not knocking New Jersey. It would just be kinda strange.

"S": The person <A href="http://torontoist.com/2009/02/goomageddon.php";>commenting</a> at Torontoist about the nonexistent Cadbury egg advertorial was <em>NOW</em>'s Josh Errett (and former Torontoist editor until 2006).

What Jerrold was <a href="http://torontoist.com/2009/03/flogos_owns_the_sky.php#comment-1621964";>commenting on</a> were the soap bubble men floating around the city.

I've never been to Chili's, but I think a famous U.S. chain making its way into our fair city is somewhat newsworthy. Just because something is attached to a wealthy corporate sugardaddy doesn't make it not worth profiling in a city blog. If that were the case, most events in the city should be ignored, by that logic.

Gross, More mediocre chains, thats just what we need in the burbs. Those who settle for high priced, processed ,pre-made food will enjoy I'm sure.

Opening in Vaughn is a no-brainer. It is far more affluent than downtown Toronto with far more rich teenagers and families as potential customers. Not that I like chain restaurants much. I think is is valid to report stuff from outside the downtown, especially if it reflects economic trends.

You should have reported.. just how many pieces of "flare" does Chili's have??

A lot of those American restaurant chains are automobile related. Just like McDonald's which grew with the automobile, they will still be around until the supply of gasoline runs out. Of course, once one gets into the habit, it will be hard to break out of.
DJ means Vaughan, of course the 905 will attract chains like Chili's, because of its current automobile-oriented development. Enjoy it while it lasts.

I love eating in a restaurant in a mall parking lot and looking at a menu the size of a sheet of plywood in a decor with 48 TVs and walls covered in charming nick nacks. MMmmmmm garbage.

The shops at Don Mills (at Don Mills and Lawrence) is going to have a bunch of interesting stores; including Mark McEwan's first grocery store. Oh, and a restaurant by the owners of Salad King.
@DJ: hopefully this keeps those same 905'ers from packing the restaurants I love here in the 416 :).

Chili's belongs in the burbs. It's actually half decent food for a big-box chain, a pretty decent version of tex-mex and far better than our limited options in Canada. Chipotle opening downtown is the oddity, as evidenced by the sites that Panera, Krispy-Kreme, etc opened first.

We'll probably see a Chili's in 905 centric parts of downtown (Eaton Centre/Rogers Centre/John & Richmond) eventually. Course eventually can be a very long time - Panera still hasn't ventured into the core despite having a model that would seem to be a great fit.

Another error's the headline. Vaughan isn't part of Toronto. As they keep reminding us, they're they city above us. And they have their own scandal-happy mayor.

Now, if you'd said GTA ....

I hope Guy Fieri comes to the grand opening of the new Chili's so that I can stomp on his toes and steal his backwards sunglasses.

If you hate American-born, try Alice Fazoolis right across the street from this new Chili's. We are Canadian-born contemporary Italian Food. You will get quality no "big-box restaurant" can offer. If you would like a $10 GC to entice you to come try it out, e-mail me! jlawrence@sircorp.com

I ate there last night at their VIP pre-opening. It was AWESOME! They are going to blow away all of the bland offerings with brutal service that we have been forced to put up with all these years.

Way to go Chili's!

Just this past week, I happened to have to stay at a hotel in Virginia that had a very expensive hotel restaurant. So I looked around for a nearby alternative and found Chili's, thinking "oh well, it's a chain, but at least it'll be cheaper" and it was, but the food was also very good and the service was fine, if perhaps a little too attentive. It probably helped that it was in the South and so people were pretty friendly.

As for the food: I had a fajita trio (steak, chicken, shrimp) and it was nicely spiced and plenty of food (free tortilla refills). I had a mini dessert in a shot glass and it was not so good. Their margarita's looked nice, but I didn't have one.

Would I go all the way to Vaughan to eat there? No. But if they had one downtown or midtown (where I live), I would go.

My guess is that they're expanding into Canada now cos it's a good time. US market collapsing, Canada not so much.

I have been to Chili's here in Vaughan about 10 times now. This place is terrific! The food has always been great, service wonderful and just a terrific value. I highly recommend Chili's as it is way better than all of the other bland offerings we have been fed the past 20 years (hello Boston Pizza, Kelsey's, East Sides etc., LOOKOUT!).

Yeah for Chili's.

Totally agree. Chili's is awesome. Best burgers in the city, Jalepeno Burger is the #1. Their Chocolate Molten dessert is super too.
