Hot Chocolate, With a Side of Cockroach?

Hot Chocolate CockroachesDoes Destiny Tea & Cafe have a cockroach problem? According to Ryerson student Joram Muzones it does. Apparently, Muzones and some friends were at the popular Markham hangout on Sunday when some chunks surfaced in her hot chocolate. According to Muzones:

So I get the hot chocolate, no problems there drink looks good, took a few sips, maybe a good one inch worth off the drink and I decided to put some sugar into the drink and I started stirring. As I stirred the drink I saw something in it and I thought it was chocolate chunks. When the thing finally surfaced what I saw was 2 BIG cockroaches, and a couple of legs floating around. *gags*

Needless to say, Muzones didn't finish the drink. But apparently her problems didn't end there. What now has her equally upset is the response from staff (or lack thereof) in dealing with the issue. Her friend Jason explains the whole situation and has posted more photos in a forum thread here. Meanwhile, Muzones has created a Facebook Group which at the time of this post has more than 800 members.

According to DineSafe, Destiny Tea & Cafe has a clean record. Anyone else ever have any problem there?

Watch for the "exclusive" tonight on CityNews. ;)

Ratpick on December 9, 2008 at 10:26 AM

Those aren't "BIG" cockroaches. They're kinda small.

No need to exaggerate!

Kenny on December 9, 2008 at 10:27 AM

Don't forget the live video too.

Now here's the question, were the crawlers in the sugar or already in the hot chocolate? Cuz I can't see'em in the instant pakage I that's the case. But if it was homemade, at least we know they use natural ingredients.

I'm glad someone is doing something about this. Destiny staff have always been rude and unhelpful, not to mention the powedery, water downed drinks they serve.

I get that they are the first giaaaant tea house to house all the high school students, but come on, they have been abusing their powers ever since. I remember going there as a high school student with all my high school friends, back when they were just starting out because really, a gathering of 20 is too much for Ten Rens or 168 to handle. (This was before the glorious Go4Tea, the new Ten Rens or new Destiny north of Steeles, all of which are massive in space.)

This just squeaked in to being a story in Toronto, being so close to Steeles. It's more in the Markham area.

Cockroaches? In a drink? That's the sort of news that goes viral fast. If I was the shop owner, I would be very worried right now...

Liv on December 9, 2008 at 12:12 PM , replying to a comment from Ratpick

cockroaches nonetheless.

Heather on December 9, 2008 at 12:47 PM

Ratpick - I was thinking the exact same thing. I mean, yeah, fully disgusting to find that, and I'd probably throw up, but I'm used to the Australian cockroaches.

Hamish Grant on December 9, 2008 at 1:11 PM

Must've ordered the "special" hot chocolate.

Dan on December 9, 2008 at 1:15 PM

For Some reason you are surprised that an Asian Restaurant doesn't follow standard Health and Saftey Protocol? It seems pretty normal to me.

RBeezy on December 9, 2008 at 1:29 PM

I'm calling "shenanigans!" on this one.

Heather on December 9, 2008 at 1:40 PM , replying to a comment from RBeezy

I agree. Don't bugs float? How would they have not surfaced until the drink was stirred?? And how would the staff have not noticed?? Seems pretty fishy to me...

zukeeper on December 9, 2008 at 1:41 PM

totally unacceptable, including the staff's bizarre behaviour.
Obviously the media should know as this restaurant doesn't understand they are accountable. This should be posted to Chowhound also:

what do u expect from those trash place?

those are just some demoralized people who don't wanna work there in the first place and not professional either. all in all, does not worth going and reason why not going.

Amy on December 9, 2008 at 2:42 PM

I think this story needs to be edited. Joram Muzones is a female.

Tim on December 9, 2008 at 3:31 PM , replying to a comment from Amy

Oops. The gender has been corrected.

Jason on December 9, 2008 at 3:35 PM

The person who posted on FB is Joram, I'm her friend Jason, who helped her to post on ClubRSX/ TSXClub/ and RFD. I don't know who Tim is but thanks for sharing to public, you can edit your first post.

However, Tim, I would advice you to take this down for temp, because from various sources this blogto (creator) would also be getting sue if Destiny wants to, we would not like you to take any responsibility to legal issue unless you are willing to. Feel free to contact me via e-mail. Jason.

Jason on December 9, 2008 at 3:36 PM

Tim, you still need to fix it again. Contact me ASAP.

Mike on December 9, 2008 at 3:41 PM

I'm curious on what grounds Destiny is going to sue on?

Moneesha on December 9, 2008 at 4:36 PM

Destiny would likely bring forward a defamation suit, if at all. I'm not sure how successful they will be, though--unless, of course, the cockroach thing was made up.

Look up the defences to defamation: truth of statements and fair comment. I'm assuming that Tim has based his article based upon supporting facts (pictures). If not, Jason's advice (of taking the article down) may be warranted.

Lynn on December 9, 2008 at 4:37 PM

i dont think you should take it down because they might sue.
my problem with destiny is the way they dealt with the situation, not so much with the cockroach.
these things happen and if they apologized and took the tab off the whole thing would have been blown over. but they not only treated the girl and called her immature and then tried to elevate the situation.
in civil court, they'd have to have the prove that either any of the facts the girl said were until true. using the fact that they have a clean record is not proof enough

J on December 9, 2008 at 5:52 PM

Its in Scarborough if you're referring to the location on Silver Star which the dinesafe link goes to.

If you're referring to a location in Markham or Richmond Hill you should check with York Region Public Health - http://tinyurl.com/5me6xx

Jason on December 9, 2008 at 6:17 PM

Hey Tim, just went to the Lawyer office and seek advice. You can keep this blog up as long as it's clean and it stays on topic. Any non-related assumption will put us in trouble.

Thanks for sharing this disgusting experience to others.

Jason on December 9, 2008 at 7:11 PM

Hey Tim, Joram would like to you to msg her on FB. She would like to talk to you.

Moneesha on December 9, 2008 at 7:41 PM

Who is this "Jason"? Does he work for Blogto?

Redford on December 9, 2008 at 8:58 PM

Something very similar happened about two years ago at another Bubble tea place, this time at Warden/Steeles. Very similar. Cockroaches found, manager called, police called, insulting discount offered, the whole shebang! I wonder if there's a "how to be a shitty manager" guide going around or something.

Jason on December 9, 2008 at 9:24 PM , replying to a comment from Moneesha

Nope, I don't work for blogTO. I'm a friend of Joram, also there that night. Some of my friend show me this link and thus I see some info wasn't correct @ the first place, so I asked the creator (Tim) to edit it but it seems like it has not been addressed yet.

jacky on December 9, 2008 at 10:41 PM , replying to a comment from Ratpick

would you still drink that?

Tim on December 9, 2008 at 10:42 PM , replying to a comment from Jason

I have made the updates now (I think)

prod on December 10, 2008 at 12:46 AM

this occurred at the scarborough location and should be fixed. It's not markham...still toronto

Danielle on December 10, 2008 at 3:43 AM

I've eaten there before and found the food suspect, the staff unfriendly and not very attentive, so I'm really not surprised that this occurred.

Ryan L. on December 10, 2008 at 6:35 AM , replying to a comment from Redford

I wonder if there is more than one place in that mall that serves bubble tea as my coworkers get bubble tea from a place in that plaza... Should I tell them?

D on December 10, 2008 at 10:47 PM

Sigh they have no grounds to sue you for defamation or else a good chunk of the media would be eliminated. Freedom of press duh?

Call the Chinese media like SingTao or whoever. Destiny will be in so much shit after that.

C Lam on December 11, 2008 at 12:06 AM

Let's be honest guys...
Destiny's is already known for crap attitude and there have been many cases of cockroaches in Asian milk powder.

But none the less, that is DISGUSTING and Destiny's...I've lost all my happiness =( No more Destiny's 7$ cakes for me

Haha.

Pearl on December 11, 2008 at 10:58 AM

It's a well known fact that Destiny's service is much to be desired. For years it has been plagued by poor customer service culture, mainly from its unrelenting desire for cash profits. I hope the market responds and forces Destiny to do business the right way.

Willy Wonderful on March 16, 2009 at 9:14 AM , replying to a comment from Jerrold

There's no CKRoachs @ destiny.

???? how did it get in da drink is still a mystery. Da mixer didn't catch 2 cockroachs. Da server didn't catch it and it floated after someone starts to drink it.

ummmmm

????
