Poutine TorontoA new poutine chain called Smoke's Poutinerie is set to open its first location in Toronto next month, upstairs from the Burrito Boyz near Simcoe and Adelaide.

Checking out the menu on their web site, it looks like they won't be holding back. I counted 15 different poutine varieties including the Montreal Poutine (shaved Montreal smoked meat, Kosher dill pickle slices and French mustard on the side), Butter Chicken Poutine (slow roasted chicken breast and spicy curry sauce) and Traditonal Veggie Poutine (rich vegetable gravy, Eastern Township cheese curds).

It seems that the owners are so confident in the uptake of their poutine product that seven locations are already planned, including a second Toronto spot in The Annex and a mobile poutine truck that will be touring the GTA and making appearances at special events.

Check back with us next month as we'll be sure to have a full gravy-induced review once they're open.

Most people have not had proper poutine - MUST HAVE SQUEAKY CHEESE CURDS

Hopefully these guys will do it right.

And remember it's POO-TSIN not POO-TEEN, you crazy Ontario anglos.

Malcolm Bastien on October 24, 2008 at 4:56 PM

I second - "MUST HAVE SQUEAKY CHEESE CURDS"

Brad on October 24, 2008 at 4:57 PM

I am so looking forward to proper poutine in Toronto, why no restaurants tried filling this gap before now is beyond me

I just drooled on my keyboard.

Finally... a decent looking poutine place here in TO... the only good poutine I've had is from Steamie's in Oshawa... and it's kinda hard to make a trip all the way out there just for poutine.

David on October 24, 2008 at 9:18 PM

They're trying to dress it up and make it hip and charge ridiculous prices. "Butter Chicken putine"? Get real! Typical pretentious Toronto. Poutine is and should always be street food.

Lyndon on October 24, 2008 at 9:29 PM

Looks interesting, but the proof will be in the Poutine :)

OH BOY on October 25, 2008 at 12:00 AM

Yeah, that's where they sell it. In the street. A deep fryer on the sidewalk.

Poutine man on October 25, 2008 at 10:52 AM

Its going to be like New York Fries. NYF sells $5 fries!!!!!!

So this is going to be $20 poutine.

RyGuy on October 25, 2008 at 11:51 AM

I love my poutine
And while i don't know how well offerings like the 'butter chicken' will sell.
i am happy that this place will exist for my straight up poutine fix

Kenny don't be a dummy
we're talking about french fries here

i don't really think this has anything to do with toronto being 'Pretentious'

Ry-Tron on October 25, 2008 at 12:19 PM

La Belle's (NOT La Belle Province) poutine in La Chute is the standard by which all others will be judged. It's a totally unfair fight, but dead seriously, you have not had a poutine until you've had theirs. I imagine this place will be fine (butter chicken poutine, though? Really? unghh), but if they don't get the one thing that no other poutine has been able to get right in Toronto (hint: the gravy), then it will be cheese-covered epic fail.

Corina on October 25, 2008 at 4:59 PM

Guess these guys are too late for me to include in the 'Best Toronto Poutine' coming up.. trop tard, domages!

N on October 26, 2008 at 9:44 AM

Bah, more unhealthy food.

july_jones on October 26, 2008 at 11:49 AM

Hurray! This will bring Toronto's vegetarian poutine count up to...two! A big win.

P.S. Where else besides Sneaky Dee's can I find it?

Sean M. on October 27, 2008 at 10:45 AM

Bah, I'll still likely hold out until my next trek to Quebec City for Chez Ashton.

Andrea on October 27, 2008 at 4:00 PM

Utopia has vegetarian poutine and it's delicious. Their "gourmet" poutine isn't traditional, but my oh my it's worth the line to get a table.

Sambot on October 27, 2008 at 4:32 PM

I'm surprised it took this long for a poutine place to open in downtown Toronto

ashmantoronto on October 30, 2008 at 11:00 AM

finally! though it may not be Chez Ashton (poutinerie in Quebec/Montreal) I'm excited about this.
I hope they do justice to this amazing Canadian delicacy

helen on October 31, 2008 at 1:57 AM

you can get veg poutine at clinton's (corner of clinton and bloor) but they seem to use frozen fries so that ruins it. also, i saw it on the menu at futures on bloor.. i suspect they use that mushroom gravy they have there.
i didn't know sneaky dees' is vegetarian.
so, the count will be at 5! yay, cannot wait!

helen on October 31, 2008 at 1:58 AM

and i agree utopia's is delicious.. both their regular and gourmet (with mushrooms and goat cheese!) kinds

helen on November 1, 2008 at 4:58 AM

just found out about 2 more places with veggie poutine!

Stampede Bison Grill - 5 Brock Avenue

and.. believe it or not, burger king.

Learn everything you always wanted to know about Canadian curds but were afraid to ask in this month All You Need is Cheese Podcast show:

Butter Chicken poutine sounds gross if it is an authentic recipe but by the description it sound more like a standard chips and curry sauce with chicken. Which is delicious.

raymi on November 20, 2008 at 10:11 AM

Tried it last night finally and I like! Not as good as a Mondo Fritz in Montreal, but pretty close!

LS's Lover on July 29, 2009 at 9:43 AM

Had the nacho grande and the traditional last night....very tasty!

Sinful on September 25, 2009 at 7:14 AM

@Helen: It does not surprise me, since the veggie burger at BK is way superior than many overpriced ones you can eat at restaurants throughout the city!

Not that anyone will make me eat Poutine, mind you. But my son decided to work here, and that's why I am avidly reading these reviews. He is very positive about the place.
