Booze Bottle "Bag It Back" to Begin Soon

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / January 21, 2007

80 million alcohol bottles, cans and containers from Ontario make their way into landfills each year. Reducing landfill and enhancing the efficiency of the existing blue box recycling program are on the agenda. On February 5th, the LCBO launches its new "Bag it Back" bottle deposit program.

20070120_bagitback.jpgAlmost all beverage alcohol containers (wine bottles and boxes, beer cans, and liquor bottles) will be subject to a $0.10 or $0.20 deposit at the time of purchase, which will be refunded when the containers are returned to the Beer Stores (find your nearest return location).

I'm all for it, and hope that people quickly adjust to and support the program.

Check out their FAQs for more info.

Ironic that the LCBO charges a deposit on all their products yet you can only obtain the said deposit at the Beer Store.

Yes, the return to The Beer Store instead of the Liquor Store requirement does seem a little inconvenient at first.

But I think that this program could only be made possible by taking advantage of the logistics already in place for beer bottle pickup at TBS.

It wasn't the LCBO that set-up this system. Thank the provincial government for that.
