The Toronto casino now has a website

Posted by Robyn Urback / February 20, 2013

Toronto CasinoToronto's not-yet-confirmed casino is now real, at least, on the Internet. Like Manti Te'o girlfriend, the currently imaginary casino now has its very own website, complete with information on potential job growth, tourism projections, casino employee salary expectations, and links to connect with your local councillor. No Casino Toronto is on the other end of the (web) spectrum, offering a less flashy take on casino information and no photos of the Canadian International Air Show.

The MGM Resorts website makes the case for Exhibition Place as Toronto's casino destination, claiming that, "The site will attract one million new visitors to Toronto annually, provide the city with millions of dollars per year in new revenue streams, and create up to 10,000 new jobs locally."

Toronto is a world class city and it's about time that we have a world class casino to go with it. The Oxford proposal would have the casino right in the heart of downtown. The congestion (already at unsustainable levels) would go through the roof with the addition of this casino/hotel/retail/convention centre to the downtown core. I think this is the best use of the Ex land.. here's to hoping that the 'left' doesn't find a way to unnecessarily shoot this down!

all bribes all have been paid out to city councillors. it's a done deal. these people have more money than donald trump. a 5 mil referendum on a previous casino bid that didn't pass is peanuts to these people.

I really hope this happens -- I'm tired of shitty places like Innisfil getting funding from stuff like this.

The last place a casino should be is in the 905.

One million new visitors? Who wouldn't have considered Toronto previously? From where? I thought all the large cities within driving distance already had a casio or two nearby.

Who says a world class city needs a casino? Atlantic City has lots of casinos, and how much good did they do?

Hey C Shef, your contribution isn't exactly constructive either:

"here's to hoping that the 'left' doesn't find a way to unnecessarily shoot this down!"

I'm on the left, and I welcome a casino. How about not making this a left-right issue, as that would be more constructive. Okay?

Oh man... I hate this city. I was born in downtown Toronto 21 years ago and I can't wait to get out. I am so excited to not have to spend all of my paycheque on rent in a disgusting basement apartment and $120 for a transit pass, elbow my way past rude, pretentious people just to get on a stuffed subway car. I'm going somewhere where the people are genuine, the air is fresh and I don't have to cross twelve lanes of traffic to get to a lake.

I on the other hand, fully support a casino and I would be as some of you call a lefty.
Bring the casino! I want a casino!

The excuse of it attracting problem gamblers is just stupid. Like any addict, a problem gambler will find any way to gamble. Online, Drive 3 hours, Drive downtown, go to the corner store.

Cannot wait until the casino is built!

What i do not understand is people like Geoff above me, state "How can anyone get behind a business model that operates on deceit and cheats people"
There is a simple answer.
Don't go to the casino. Nobody is forcing you to step foot in the thing.
My decision to go to a casino is mine and only mine. Who are you to impose your views on others?
Clearly there are many who are for the casino and many who are not.
If you do not want a casino, then don't visit it once it is built. However, i really hope that you do not live in a condo downtown because then you would just be ignorant to think that a casino is going to bring traffic congestion, as if the condo you live in does not add to the congestion.
Condo's are a bigger problem to congestion then a casino.

I rely on you government for my self control, you've already saved me from alcohol by not allowing it in grocery and convenience stores. You let me down with this whole Sunday shopping thing, but I've come to terms with it now. The city doesn't need you money casino, we don't need money for transit, school programs, the arts or social assistance...we've been operating just fine without you..we have no complaints.

Your rationale that problem gamblers will drive anywhere shows that you seem to operate under an assumption that the number of problem gamblers is static and will always remain the same. Your logic fails to realize that building a new casino will create new problem gamblers, perhaps to some locals who have yet to ever step inside a casino. People become problem gamblers because of the opportunities placed around them, not because random people wake up with an obsessive urge to endlessly pull the lever on a slot machine. Don't try to be the hero that finds a quick way to summarize this issue (as with condo developments), it's unfortunately more complicated than you perceive it to be.

The thing that stinks about this casino business is that it's being rammed down on throats by the province. If the City is going to get a casino it should be on our terms. It should be done in a way that makes our local politicians accountable, not the OLG.

If anything the City should vote on it then decide on a location then put the proposals in a competition and hold public meetings to decide not only the winner but the design and how this design fits into the city building goals.

We should be leveraging the private interest for our benefit, not to the benefit of the OLG.

Seriously though, casinos are lame. They only invite vermin and losers who can't have fun in a normal fashion. Hence the "burbs" crack, which I still stand by. Let THEM deal with the dead hookers, crack pipe bushes and inevitable DUI deaths. (speaking of Etobicoke on Saturday night...)

I'm happy to see this comment stream disprove the all-to-easy soundbite that the 'left' is universally anti-casino, or development, or fun. I'd put myself on the left of the political spectrum, and I'm excited for the tourism boost, top-shelf architecture, and energy that a destination like this COULD bring to our city. There are pros and cons to ANY development, but hopefully with the right team & process in place, and as long as the Ontario and Toronto governments fight for a decent deal, we could see something really positive added to our growing city.

Could be good, could be bad.... I, for one, am willing to give them a chance. What may come of it? Who knows? As Canadians, and particularly, as Torontonians, I think we suffer from a "stick in the mud" complex - unwilling to accept any change. This is something that we could benefit from. On the other hand, it could be a steaming pile of shit.

I agree with you totally. It's an unspoken thing that's hard to quantify in a city full of people only interested in Toronto for the purposes of making money. Like me, you are a dying breed- an actual, bonafide born and raised Torontonian. And like almost all of them, you're getting the hell out before you turn 30. Let the transplants and immigrants have the city. It sucks now, but with their only frame of reference being Dhaka or Woodstock, they don't know it. Let them think it's amazing as it actually swirls the bowl. Me and you, we'll be happy elsewhere and we'll be trying to recreate what made Toronto interesting before capitalism destroyed its soul.

A casino anywhere on the waterfront, including the EX grounds, would be a total waste of waterfront property, after all casinos don;t have windows so people can be reminded of the time passing so why waste a scenic location with them? If we must have a casino put it at Woodbine, there's easy highway access and it would keep horse racing alive in this region. We should be keeping the waterfront lands for uses that benefit the waterfront or benefit from being somewhere scenic like the waterfront. Once you;re inside a casino you never see outside of it so it could just as effectively be built underground. I like the idea if expanding convention space downtown, even along the waterfront since people at conventions do get outside and attend near by attractions which are plentiful downtown. Any casino downtown or along the waterfront will cost nearby cultural and entertainment businesses lost business since people in casinos don;t leave for entertainment for other venues, they stay inside the casino. Woodbine can handle the parking and the cars and there's very little in the way of cultural or entertainment venues in the area that would be harmed by its presence there. If we keep building such permanent structures at the EX where will the EX go?

We shouldn't build a casino because casinos don't make money for cities.
Aside from the considerable social costs that I understand many on the "right" are happy to ignore, there are far too many examples of money losing casino ventures to argue on their behalf from a business case.

How is it that they who seem to know the least seem to say the most. The problem with Casinos is compulsive gamblers and the problem for compulsive gamblers is machine gambling. Take away the slot, poker and electronic blackjack/baccarat games and you take away most of the problem gambling. Problem gambling is although not exclusively, frequently a woman's dirty little secret. They feel no one knows, that they are all alone with their electronic machine in their comfort zone. It is all an illusion of course. Those nearest and dearest find out sooner or later. If we force these people to gamble in front of and with other people from the start, that illusion will be smashed and a lot of heartache avoided. Slot machines have the highest take out and require no skill. Of course gambling should be legal. But it should be a social interaction and not isolation.
