With the exception of one or two pics...none of these should even be in this "contest"

"A panel of judges from the City of Toronto, the Toronto Star, the Toronto Society of Architects and Panasonic have sorted through 957 entries to arrive at these ten finalists"

Of course they don't know anything about photography do they Steven? What are your qualifications?

I have three degrees related to art/art history/photography.
I studied both the historical and practical sides of photography for 5+ years.
I teach photography, graphics and digital photography and manipulation.
Telling me judges came from the city and the star hardly supports your argument... a BIG LOL on that note.
Anything else you NITwit?

So you have three related degrees and are lucky enough to work teaching in a field that you know and love and yet you feel that the best use of your intellect and time is to make disparaging remarks about entries in an amateur photography contest?
Sad.
Steven the "Sad" :-( / June 18, 2012 at 05:59 pm

Oh, NITwit, you are the sad one. The NET in general and BlogTO is there to create discussion, share opinions, art and information - I didn't name call, or name specific photos even - it was a general impression of the pool of selected entries.

As YOU pointed out there were other bodies that selected the finalists...perhaps my criticism was directed at them?! Did I even name the photographers? No. You sir/madame are the troll. The only thing I have done in a disparaging tone is call you that which you are. I added to the context of the web and this posting by suggesting in my opinion very few of the photos were contest worthy. Thereby (if read) asking the viewers to examine them for what they are.

I guess you like mediocrity? The banal? The laundered and deliberate images we see day in a day out on FB, twitter, flckr and in our newspapers (not that much better than what the general public can offer most of the time) and the like?

Tell me, when you examine these photos you do not see how commonplace they are. Even "Alan" has agreed with my sentiments...but you'll notice "Alan" and myself did not specifically name one photograph -so as not to do specific harm. I'm sure there is a "Bob" or "Ahmed" or "Latisha" that would disagree with me, totally fine! They're allowed their opinions, as am I. You obviously think they're all stellar works of art that should hang in a gallery.

Criticism is the backbone of how we improve in any field or discipline and these photo entries were put up for a contest, a battle if you will, a criticism from "judges" that named 10 out of many entries, perhaps they got bored? Or seeing that one photo has stood out among the rest opted to put other less obvious choices so as to confuse the viewer and assure the winner they wanted was the one that will be selected by the public, a seemingly democratic vote (sadly having sat on such a jury -this type of angle often tried out).

If they were all so good, their wouldn't be such a lead by a single image!

So, I added my 2 cents. That is all.

" I LOVE THAT PICTURE FROM LINDEN!!! VERY CREATIVE IN ALL ASPECT OF THE WORD......IMAGINATIVE AND INNOVATIVE as having the reflections as the main focal point instead."

Actually Steven, I was thinking the exact same thing. Taking a critical perspective and looking at these photographs ... most of them are not very good

@steve, which two do you think qualify?
Steven / June 19, 2012 at 10:53 am

I wondered when that would be asked! lol

#9 is quite stunning - saturated colour, the choice to invert, an example of the rule of thirds is displayed

..and this is where it gets dodgy as opinions would widely vary as there could be a multitude of reasons, but #7 for its composition, the wispy figures and the static running shoes are contradicting one another and not in a classic juxtaposed way.

Just my opinion, by looking at the votes, there is a varied opinion.

Hi
The judges came from Panasonic (Their staff rep is a photographer), The photo journalist pool at the star, one city staff member and the last one is a local architect.
Cheers,

In most contests, you look at the quality of finalist pictures & think, "Oh, of course they were chosen! They deserved it. Bravo!". But so far, popular opinion says this is not one of those contests. And considering the calibre of MANY other entries at www.flickr.com/groups/doorsopentoronto/, I have to agree with Steven.

Still...it's nice to see that Linden's picture will probably win People's Choice. It caught my eye from the beginning. Very lovely.

I don't think he's trolling.

Furthermore, your comment is not constructive. It does NOT make his opinion any less valid.

Trolling or engaging in discourse/conversation? I work with media. I use BLOGto to teach, showing students work that is currently be put out there as ART... when in fact it may not be.

I "troll" many local publications, online and offline.

My life is exciting, thanks for taking note! I've thoroughly enjoyed this exchange with many detractors. What's quite funny is, I don't think one of them commented and defended the high caliber of photos selected, they've simply bashed my comments to the contrary. You being one of them Chris. I've used these exchanges in class today!

Thanks for the feedback, it's great to show students that there will always be the likes of George W.'s out there but to continue on anyhow.

:-)

Freedom of speech and opinion is great. Helps us all to see things from different points of views! Comments were just as interesting as the pictures.

#9 is absolutely spectacular and dramatic.

clearly has Linden has an eye for creativity and can take something simple and have a full imagination for it.

Only good artists with great imaginations can see what we don't.

As a participant in this year's contest and as an avid photographer, I have to say I'm a bit disappointed in what the judges have come out with here. I have looked at each and every entry on the flickr pool, and I have to say I think there was some rushing here- perhaps a glass of wine or a beer or 7 got in the way during the decision making process. Of all the entries, I'd say 25% of them had some true thought, talent and actual composition. Sure, some of us have better equipment than others, however a good photo is NOT in the equipment, it's in the eye of the photographer. Equipment only takes something excellent and improves it. I've taken some great shots with cheap point and shoots... $h!t, even my iphone. However, we have to keep in mind when arguing and debating that this is just a little photo contest meant for fun and for sharing the many great images taken throughout this great weekend event- it's not a pro photo contest for a $10,000 prize purse. May the best amateur photographer win and have a chance at a half decent mid range point and click camera to shoot with at next year's Doors Open Toronto!

Especially like 3, 7, 8 and 10. Probably #10 the best (molson amphitheatre - very effective shot), tho I'm always pulled in by spiral stairacases too (# 7 campbel museum). Thought the texture of # 3 (for york leather strap) was fantastic and altho not a fan of sepia, I thought it worked here. Loved #8's cross-shaped modern cut-out, very cool and on theme with the cathedral, nice lighting with subtle people reflections on the left, but it was hard for me to see it in full on my screen...seems there were difficult cropping decisions? and something maybe off-balance or after-straightened to it...but really, really liked it. Great job everyone. Keep on clicking :)
