Market Street revitalization pushes forward

Posted by Robyn Urback / February 22, 2012

20100911 Market Street South View.jpgPlans to update and improve Market Street — the thoroughfare that connects Front and The Esplanade on the south side of the St. Lawrence Market — continue to trudge on, though it sounds like a year-round pedestrian-only space isn't in the cards.

When plans were first announced in 2010, it seemed as though private developer Woodcliffe Properties was working towards creating a space that would be free from vehicular traffic. Paul Oberman was the president of Woodcliffe at the time, a man well-known for his revitalization projects throughout Toronto, including the old North Toronto CPR Station / LCBO flagship store. Oberman died tragically in a plane crash in March 2011, and a movement later spawned to rename Market Street in his honour.

201191-market-street-rendering.jpgWhile the name issue still appears to be in question, Oberman's wife, Eve Lewis, recently told Yonge Street Media that, "Everything is going according to Paul's original design."

"We have gotten the approval for the sidewalk widening," she added, "which is the first private initiative [like that] that's ever been done in the city."

According to Councillor Pam McConnell's winter newsletter, however, Market Street may not take shape exactly as first hoped. She notes that plans include bollards to divide the sidewalk from street parking, which means despite the widened sidewalks (which will taper down to the street, eliminating a curb), cars will still be able to navigate the block.

The newsletter also outlines other Market Street revitalization details, which include Woodcliffe's restoration of the LBCO, construction of new office spaces, and renovations to introduce restaurants at street level. The Market is also planning for an enclosed retail space on the east side. Construction will likely start this spring.

Good Lucan with that. The street is a perpetual traffic jam, they built a condo at the bottom where you are actually in a traffic jam before you leave your spot in the parking lot.

removing vehicle traffic will take care of that. Decisions shouldn't only be made based on what is good for traffic but what is best for the city. SLM is one of Toronto's most important landmarks and should be treated as such.

Cars are ok if adequately calmed. They do add a certain "public" aspect to the street. This is why in the fake "towne centre" lifestyle shopping centers all over the US you see fake streets with one lane of slow car traffic and meter parking running down the middle of the "mall" -- makes it all more urban and real. Let's see how it turns out.

The reason market st is a nightmare is because there a few parking lots that exit onto market. You might be able to change the green p but both the co-op and new condo have parking lots with one exit. The exit feeds onto market st. That's south of esplanade north of esplanade is delivery trucks. I'm just saying don't hold your breath.

I thought they were only talking about the stretch between Front and The Esplanade. That stretch is already one-way south. You couldn't remove cars from below The Esplanade because of entrances and exits to the residential building.

I'm pretty sure I've seen bollards (so that's what you call them, eh?) in pedestrian-only zones in European cities.

Sometimes delivery vehicles and taxis are still allowed in those zones — driving very slowly, obviously. So bollards are a good idea, and not necessarily a sign that the pedestrian-only concept has been abandoned. Let's hope it hasn't.

City planning in Toronto is just insane. As has been mentioned, the entire place is clogged with cars already, this is only going to make it worse, and for what benefit?

This stretch of Market St. is actually quite steep as it approaches Front, and thanks to the buildings around it, tends to be permanently devoid of sunlight. Just doesn't make sense to be a pedestrian area.

You know what area could be, though?

The area bordered by Wellington on the South, Church on the East, King on the North and Yonge on the West....it could totally be a cool little pedestrian area. Already has some neat bars and restaurants with a bit of a historic vibe.

I enjoy walking by that rundown building. The colours pop out and it's something different to see in the city. One time I saw some people filming and they had a camel and it looked like a whole different part of the world. I guess LCBO is a good plan to put in the area and I really enjoy the outdoor seating.
