Photos of Doors Open 2011

Posted by Derek Flack / May 30, 2011

Doors Open Toronto 2011Doors Open 2011 has come and gone, leaving behind an array of photographs of the various participating venues. As was to be expected, the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant proved one of the most popular destinations, a fact out by the remarkable photographs we get to pore over today. Our site-specific Doors Open coverage this year focused on some of the buildings that we had yet to visit or see many photographs of, but because there's just so much cool stuff on offer, this photo gallery from the blogTO Flickr pool aims to give a general sense of what the weekend was like. It still, however, only represents a fraction of the 150 buildings included on the list this year. In other words, if you have photos you'd like to share, we'll do our best to add them this post over the course of the day. Lead photo by Florence Chan.

I'm not surprised there are no pics of the Flatiron. Biggest joke of the weekend.

What happened at the Flatiron?

Nothing. That's what happened. I was in the very first group on the saturday so fortunately no wait. And it was just a guy talking and then we walk up the stairs and then back down again. None of the offices were open. We couldn't go to the top floor to Gooderham's office and look out his window. It was just a stairwell, and old elevator that we couldn't use, and a safe. Hopefully they realized how much it sucked that they changed it for the sunday crowd.

I ended up there too, and it was a huge disappointment. Over head other people saying that's it, waste of time, etc.

Flatiron has been a waste of time before too.. I heard there were HUGE line ups this weekend again. They should make it clear to people what they are seeing. In previous year we got to go in one or two rooms (I think an architectual firm) but overall it is much more impressive from the outside.

I really like the Native family/children centre (pic above of one of the lodges). The rooftop was really nice there.

I took part in Doors Open for the first time. It was a mixed bag, some buildings were really great, others so-so. Overall it was a good experience and I'll do it again.

The highlights for me were the Knesseth Israel Synagogue, the Islamic Information & Dawah Centre International at Bloor and Dufferin (the guide was great!) and the 54th floor of the TD tower.

That's my Osgoode Hall photo, but it's been edited. How did you straighten the image so that it looks like it was taken head-on? I like your version better. :P

Wow! Glad I missed Flatiron. We ended up at the Toronto-Dominion Centre instead. Tour was worth the long wait: well-organized, informative volunteers, spectacular view.

The Flatiron was no better on Sunday. Highlight of the weekend was seeing a Lancaster bomber from the 54th floor of the TD Tower (which also had a very good tour, two thumbs up for TD and Heritage Toronto)! RC Harris was also great and the city staff did a good job of answering questions.
